My grandfather told me after the world war II the american government sent thousand of missionaries to educate the filipinos they created doctors, nurses, teachers and a lot more. As far as I know Filipino people love american people everytime I talk to my friends, classmates, neighbors they really happy for all the help of americans maybe because we are open minded we know how to appreciate all the help that we receive and we are eager to learn. I remember when I was a kid every children in Philippines received a powder milk and some food from american that was 20 years ago. And most of my playmates have an american poster parents to support them. I remember that time I was so jealous to my playmates because they received a beautiful toys from their poster parents every christmas hahaha but me, I don't have poster parents the filipino government told me that I don't need poster parents because my parents are businessman and they can give what I want. And everytime i went to the library I always read in the books that " this book is for filipino people given by _________ University in America." We filipino really feel the love and care of Americans.

yeah right, "poster"parents......IT SHOULD BE FOSTER!

Hahaha ok thanks for correcting me...

Out of all of the people posting, how many have actually spent any length - longer than six months -of time there?

Accents or not, the current Thai educational system cannot compete with that of the Philippines.

One of the major sectors of employment in the Philippines is call centre work. These aren't call centres for local businesses in the most part, but huge international companies use the Philippines for their call centres due to their proficiency in English.

People from the Philippines who teach English in Thailand work in Thailand because they work for CHEAP wages -- not because they can speak English correctly or are able to speak English without a debilitating accent... Philippine nationals for the most part speak POOR ENGLISH and speak English with a severe accent. Thus any Thai student in an English class conducted by a Philippine English instructor is likely to learn poor English and learn English with an accent that makes their English hardly understandable ... That's the bottom line folks - no matter how many may rationalize it ....

I was in the education contract business for a while providing English instructors to Thai industry. The Philippine teachers I employed all had degrees and 60% spoke and wrote English well. 20% were bad and 20 % were great speakers and teachers. There is a Philippine man who runs a school in Rayong that if you talked to him on the phone you would say 100% sure that he is an American. A lot of Philippine teachers in Thailand are on Facebook. Not hard to prove if anyone really wants to find the real information. The real bottom line is 8 out of 10 are good or better and a lot less expensive than Farang teachers.

Then you're in the minority of posters that can give a response worth reading. Do your "wives" know about each other?

Personally, I lived in the Philippines for a year and a half, I have a Filipino wife and daughter, and have lived in Bangkok for 6 years.

The trouble with threads like this, they generally turn into a 'willy waving' contest and become a bore.

Everybody has an accent anyway so accent shouldn't be an issue as other native english speakers has their own "debilitating" accent as you put it. Being able to speak the english language is one thing that Filipino's would always be proud of wherever they are. Of course, there are a few who cannot but that's one in a hundred I guess. They are willing to work CHEAP wages, for you, but for them it is not. You have to remember, everything is relative, what is cheap for you, may not be for some.

Why all this hoobra over Thai/Philippino English skills? What is the point of having good English language skills like the Ph yet your country is still a basket case?

The Republic of the Phillipines is making progress in many areas. While not perfect, it is progress none-the-less. As for it being a "basket case"', I haven't achieved perfection and am not qualified to determine what fits into that vague category. Others attach names and slurs quite readily and my pontifcations would be wasted on the subject.

In Thai school systems -- those who run the schools - budget their English language Departments using Native English Language pay scales ... that is those native English language speakers from places like the U.K., Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Then the Thai school system hires English teachers from the Philippines -- at nearly half the wage scale ... Somewhere along the line -- the excess budget money is siphoned off to the senior school supervisor's pockets .... This is the Primary Reason Philippine teachers are hired in Thailand.. .

Hmmmm. Well that explains why the Philippines is such a regional basketcase, with crime, corruption, and poverty much worse than Thailand. And it also explains why Thailand, with a population of around 30 million less, has about 40% higher GDP than the PI. Per capita GDP of Thailand is over double that of the PI. So education and English proficiency doesn't really mean much, does it?

Bringing up GDP is a non starter, as a comparison between Thailand and the Philippines means next to nothing in this respect. The fact of the matter is that most of either countries wealth is held by a few "Elite" families, so in turn this doesn't offer a decent representation when in both countries you will find people living below the poverty line.

You would also assume that a country with a higher GDP should be able to offer a better education system, what happened in Thailand?

The Philippines with all of it's crime, corruption, poverty and low GDP, still manages to have an educational system that teaches their pupils in the international business language of the world.

Yes there is serious levels of crime in both countries, and unless there is a paradigm shift that will always be the case.

The Philippines has more overseas workers than any other country in the world so to quote your good self "So education and English proficiency doesn't really mean much, does it?" doesn't really hold much ground now does it? Roughly 10% of the Philippine population work abroad.

In all I guess I have spoken to at least 200 Philippine English teachers. So you're calling me a liar but have not mentioned how you know so much about Philippine English teachers.

So, let me ask. How do you know so much about the thousands of Philippine English teachers that work in Thailand? When you call a man a liar the least you can do is back up your claim with a little factual information.

Well the United States won the Philippine's from the Spanish as a result of the Spanish American War in 1898, after the Philippine- American War 1899-1902 the Americans defeated the revolt of the people of the Philippines and made English the primary language of, the government, education and business, The US controlled the Philippines from 1898 to 1946.

So to answer your question, Why the people of the Philippines have more English speakers and teachers then Thailand, was a result of 48 years of English language was forced on the people of the Philippines as it official language!

Cheers

First of all sir it was never forced on the Filipino culture. They did have two bases there but are now down to one and Subic Bay is located outside of Angeles city.

English is there second-language because of the American influence, that is correct! I visited many schools when I was in the Philippines basically because I was a principal from the USA. They are taught English on the first grade level through the 12th grade level. They are the third largest English speaking country in the world. They have approximately 94% literacy in the Philippines.

I visited a first grade class with 51 students and you could hear a pin drop. When working for my Doctorate I also did a survey of some of the Filipino educational systems. Their curriculum is very sound and their universities are basically top notch. The number one University is located outside of Manila in Quezon City and the number two is in Dumaguete. The International Universities are totally top notch and with the core of instructors that they have it appears that they are extremely sound.

To sum up most of the questions asked here, it mainly depends on the lecturers or the instructors at the University that makes them a sound and quality-based educational system.

If Thailand had this quality of instructors I truly believe that their educational system could have possibilities, But they must change the curriculum in order to meet the accreditation requirements. Thai students can only be as good as the instructors or the leaders of that individual school. Thai students are extremely intelligent if Instructed properly with quality educators. Once again do not give total Autonomy to the owners of the school and the school must meet accreditation because the teachers are qualified but not in English. This is not the problem of the teachers but the leaders of the school.

For someone who claims to have a Doctorate degree you are extremely uniformed about Filipino as well as American history.

In 1898 the United States imposed the English language as the Official language of the Philippines replacing the Spanish language that was the official language of the Philippines for over 300 years. English became the language of Government, Education and Business under American occupation of the Philippine's from 1898 to 1946. The U.S. also attempted to curb the influence of the Catholic church like it had done in the territory gained from Mexico in the 1846-1848 War, As all of Latin America the church is guided from Italy (Vatican) the American Catholic Church is guided by the Church in Ireland.

As English was the international language of business it remain in the Philippine educational system, after Filipino Independence.

History clearly documents that English was Imposed as the Official Language, and as late as 1940 the Spanish language was still widely spoken in that country, This only came about due to the Spanish and American colonization of the Philippines for over 300 years!

Cheers

When I retired I thought about the Philippines but the food, guns and weird Christian sects (not Catholic) scared me away.

I lived in Cebu in 2011 and still have many, many friends there. The call centres are all based in a place called the IT Park in between Banilad and Ayala Mall. It's effectively a 24-hr place with all the fast food outlets open all the time for day and nightime workers plus some good nightspots like Penthouse and Sunflower.

There's also a massive, blue JP Morgan building that can be seen form the road and the lights are always burning there, apparently the starting wage there is around 12,000 pesos/month or around USD$250!

I've called my bank in the UK and spoken to a Filipino,I asked him where he was and he told me in Cebu, the IT Park.I was just down the road in Talamban!blink.png

If you were right and he was wrong would you expect Thais to go to the Philippines for work? Or people from the Philippines to come to Thailand for work? I just asking. Mexican people come to the US to work and Polish people come to the UK to work. If the Philippines economy was doing so well one would expect Thais and others from SEA to be flooding the Philippines looking for work. Are they?

Just to clear up a few point s here,a large amount of Filipino GDP is based on the remittance of funds from abroad by around 10 million overseas foreign workers from the Philippines.Half French, half Pinoy Michel Huillier is one of the big names in this massive shadow banking industry.Just imagine the commissions from 10 million people sending money back to the Philippines week in,week out! blink.pngMost Filipinos don't speak Spanish at all,I have native-speaking Latino friends that were teaching Spanish over there and they use to laugh at Pinoys saying "Yo soy España",which of course means I am Spain and not Spanish!laugh.png

Having said that in Visaya all the numbers are Spanish so if you speak Spanish you'll have no problems, plus a few other words are the same like mesa, cebolla etc.I'm pretty sure that Tagalog numbers are Spanish also?

There's only a few foreign nationals who works in the Philippines because the government/companies will offer the position to Fipinos first whom they believe have the skills to do the job well. As for Thai to work in the Philippines? I think is a complete joke, why would a company hire Thai's if they cannot speak English well.

I don't think they would. Thailand has a far stronger economy than the Philippines as a result pays a lot more so the Philippine people come to Thailand to work. Thai people go to Singapore and the Middle East and countries that pay more than Thailand. For example, "ANZ Bank Said to Hire Coal Trading Team From Thailand’s PTT"
