BANGKOK: -- The Election Commission is ready to accept applications from candidates to contest the February 2 election scheduled on December 23-27 and has prepared a Plan B in case there is a disruption of its operations.

EC secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong said Wednesday that the commission had discussed with the National Police Office about peace keeping during the registration of candidacy and it was agreed that there was no need for police reinforcements.

The EC will do its duty as normal, said Mr Puchong, adding that if there is any untoward incident, it will assess the situation and take actions accordingly.

Because the registration of candidacy lasts for five days, there is enough time that the task can be fulfilled.

However, in case there is a disruption of the process, he said the EC has already had a reserved plan to cope with the situation. But he declined to elaborate.

He disclosed that about 1.2 million people, including officials and civilians, would be used on the election day on February 2.
