Selling Non-thai Gold...

Featured Replies

Help!

I have a men's gold wedding ring, purchased in the USA (around 14k). I have been to several Bangkok gold shops, asking if they wanted to buy it, but they simply aren't interested.

I know that the ring is not "pure" like most Thai gold, but don't they melt some jewelry and extract the gold?

With gold reaching ever higher prices, I thought that this would be a good time to sell. Has anyone had any success in selling (non Thai/Asian) gold jewelry in Bagkok?

Thanks,

Lance

if I recall, 14 karrat is .58 gold. 24 Karrat is pure and the Canadian maple is four nines pure. Yours may cost too much time and energy to extract. They would probably tip their hand as to the price they're paying for bullion, -below spot? Who knows...

The gold that the shops are repurchasing is Thai gold jewelry which is basically23 1/2-24Kt gold. So to take those items and remake into new gold jewelry items is a very simple process...throw it all together and melt...They know that the karatage of it will be basically 24kt...But with a 14kt ring, you have to refine the gold before you can use in Thai jewelry...A lot of work for 1 ring...

Also a lot of risk since it doesn't look like the gold in Asia. Probably better pawning it back home where they'll know it is gold.

Yep, the color of my ring -more brassy looking- is definately different from Thai gold.
