Saltwater intrusion is threatening to worsen next year, as seawater levels have continued to rise.

BANGKOK: -- If the problem is not stemmed, brackish-water fisheries operators in Samut Songkhram, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom, Chachoengsao and Bangkok would face adverse impacts, Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute (HAII) director Royol Chitradon warned yesterday.

"We will need to store 1,800 million cubic metres of water to keep out saltwater and protect such areas," he said.

He pointed out that saltwater intrusion was now hitting these areas for 12 hours a day, not eight hours as in the past.

According to the HAII forecast, Thailand's rainfall will range from 1,500 to 1,600 millimetres next year. It is higher than 1,400 millimetres this year.

"The rainy season will start around May," Royol said.

He believed the Eastern region, which includes Trat, Chanthaburi and Rayong, would see huge rainfall.

Anond Snidvongs, who heads the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organisation), said that although high rainfall was expected between August and September next year, indicators did not point to a risk of serious flooding.

"I am more concerned about haze," he said.

I asked the school kid when the rains really start he said after April......and I said when do we get most of the rain he said August. He is "worried about the smoke"

Did I get this correct: the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency is concerned about haze from outer space,

and salt water infiltrating their satellites? But, at least their will be no floods in 2014.

BANGKOK: -- Six central provinces have been warned to reserve fresh water to push back the invasion of sea water which is likely to be serious during the next dry season between April-May.

Dr Royol Chitradon, director of Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute, listed the six vulnerable provinces as Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Nakhon Pathom and Chachoengsao.

He explained that in any given year if Thailand experiences very cold weather for a long period of time as has been the case for this year, the result of the following year will be severe drought due to the dry weather. So there is a high possibility that the northern region of the country will face drought next year, he said.

He pointed out that the volumes of water in the two big dams in the North namely Bhumibol and Sirikit are slightly above half of their storage capacity which is regarded as the lowest in a decade.

The two dams, he said, are the main source of water to feed some three million rai of farmland in the Chao Phraya basin.

Dr Royol said that it was worrisome that farmers have cultivated more rice than the volume of water available. For instance in this year, water was reserved to feed just four million rai of rice fields, but there were actually six million rai of rice fields as farmers planted more, he added.

An addition of 1,800 million cubic metres of water will have to be reserved by the dams in order to push back the invasion of sea water during April-May when the tide is expected to be high and last longer up to 13 hours a day instead of the normal eight hours.

Sea water will affect fish and rice farming, other plants as well as people who have to rely on fresh water.

They are not talking about a flood, but about salt water getting into the soil in low laying coastal areas. In the Netherlands, they use enormous quantities of water to prevent this from happening.
