Electricity meter in Ubon

My electricity meter (outside on a pole at the streetside) is broken. My wife tells me we have to BUY a new one from the electricity company. At home in Europe you just rent them, so I am a little confused.

Prices should range from 15000 to 18000 Baht (30 amp)??

When you the meter was installed you actually paid a deposit and it should be replaced for free.

The meters come in different sizes, 5/15, 15/45 and 30/100. The cost, installation plus deposit, of the 5/15 is 768 baht, the 15/45 around 4700 baht and the 30/100 around 12000 baht. There was a thread running in the DYI forum that had the actual costs outlined.

Hi Chris. As I understand it, you're actually putting a deposit down on the meter and you would in theory get this back in the future when you close the account and return the meter. I don't remember it being that much. The electric company will have a printed list with the required deposit/costs for different size meters. I think I found the list online once as well but can't find the site at the moment. It's been awhile since we did this so I forget the actual numbers, but it's something around 5000 - 8000 Baht for a 15(45) meter (ie 45 amp meter that's most commonly used now). Because of all the guest rooms & heating units we had to go with a giant three phase connection (3x100amp, 300 amp total), so it was quit a bit more than the basic 45 a one, but the smaller meters aren't so bad.

We did NOT buy a meter for our house. The Mrs. says it is "rented" and included in our monthly bill. I asked what happens if it gets broken and she replied the elect. co. replaces it at no charge. Our elect.co. office is in Kaengkhro.

When it was first installed you paid an installation fee and a deposit per the table that I attached. The meter is the property of PEA and if damaged it should be replaced FOC.

You don't pay rent for the meter each month. Your electric bill is determined by the KWHs that you use each month on a sliding scale. The more that you use, the more expensive it is. You then pay a fuel surcharge, currently 0.54 baht/KWH which is adjusted periodically and the 7% VAT. Look at your bill.

I have a 15/45 meter that was installed in 1998 and I paid the 4600 + baht wen it was installed. My current bill is as follows, there is no rental on the meter.

I used 710 KWH last month at 3.68 baht/KWH = 2606.91.

The fuel surcharge was 710 x 0.5) = 383.40

Subtotal = 2990.31

VAT at 7% = 209.32

Total = 3199.63on the subtotal

The unit was damaged last year by a sugar cane truck and PEA replaced it FOC a few hours after we called.

Now my understanding is there are two types of meter, rented and bought. When I first was building my house I had a rental meter, but I then when the house was completed I bought a meter, since the charge per kwh is lower. So, I think you need to figure out if your current one is rented or bought. My local PEA is also Kaeng Khro.

I'm in the process of building a house about 6 kilos from sisaket city in the "U" (I can spell the small town name)district. I have been told I have to buy a meter from the local village elect company???. I have been shopping in Ubon and see at Home Hub they sell meters. The locals tell me if I buy a HH meter I can not use in the village.

I think I'm being scammed, Is what i'm True or not?

thanks

Get the wife/GF to talk to your local PEA office. I bought mine from PEA, no idea if a HH meter will give you the lower rate
