Chiang Mai Zoo: Giant panda Lin Hui pregnant

BANGKOK, 29 December 2013 (NNT) - Chiang Mai Zoo has announced that giant panda “Lin Hui” is pregnant after an ultrasound showed a fetus in her womb. The zoo has formed a special team of veterinarians to take care of the panda 24 hours.

The zoo on Sunday said Lin Hui was expected to give birth mid January 2014 which will coincide with the Chinese New Year. The zoo had informed the Chinese Embassy in Thailand and giant pandas experts in China of Lin Hui’s pregnancy.

It was highly likely that China would allow Thailand to take care of the panda and her cub due to the zoo’s experience with “Lin Ping,” the panda’s first baby born in Thailand, the zoo said.

Chief of the Thai giant panda project Vet.Boriphat Siri-arunrat said Lin Hui might be 91 days pregnant from the day she was artificially inseminated in September 2013. The special team of veterinarians was on 24-hour standby since the gestation period of giant pandas was hard to be predicted, the doctor said.

Great, another batch of panda numberplate opportunities.

(Cute though)

Don't get ripped-off @ Chiang Mai Zoo.

Just a note of caution....about 7 years ago my wife and I and our young daughter went to the Zoo where they charged One Rate for my Wife and our Daughter but wanted more for "The FERANG."

Wife objected and told them that the "Ferang" was her husband and that the "Ferang" lives here and Pays TAXES! They then asked me my home address, which I supplied and they then let me in for the Local Rate. Had it not been for the fact that our daughter would have been let-down, we would have NOT gone to the Zoo that day.

Thailand --hub of panda births.

Hate to admit to a weakness, but they're bloody cute lil things. The babies, I mean.

CHIANG MAI, Dec 30 – Lin Hui, a giant panda on loan from China, is due to give birth next month after being artificially inseminated, according to an official announcement by Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand’s North.

Zoo official Rithinarong Kulprasutr said Lin Hui, was inseminated twice with the sperm of her male partner Chuang Chuang on September 28-29.

An ultrasound monitor on Saturday, the 91st day after the insemination, confirmed her pregnancy, due for delivery in mid-next month.

Lin Hui’s baby will be the second cub for the Chiang Mai Zoo. Lin Ping, the first panda born in Thailand in 2009, was returned to China in September to mate naturally.

Mr Rithinarong said officials at the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok and the Panda Centre in China have been informed of the good news.

Chinese specialists will be in Thailand to work closely with Thai veterinarians, he said. (MCOT online news)
