334 killed over six days of road accidents during New Year holiday

BANGKOK, Jan 2 -- Day six of the seven-day New Year holiday period saw 68 deaths and 539 injuries in 536 road accidents on January 1, bringing the death toll to 334 with 3,041 injured overall in 2,891 road accidents, according to Thailand's Road Safety Centre.

Prem urges Thais to heed HM's New Year speech

Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda Thursday urged Thais to heed the New Year speech of His Majesty the King to bring about love and unit among them.

Prem was speaking to reporters after senior police and military officers and businessmen visited him on New Year occasion.

Prem said His Majesty's speech was short but it conveyed a lot of meaning.

"To know its meaning, we must read the speech several times. If all read the speech and understand it, they will at least know how to bring about love and unity among Thais," Prem said.

NSC: Emergency decree will be necessary on Jan 13

124 complaints have been filed against public bus drivers during New Year holidays

PHUKET: -- Customs officers at Phuket International Airport arrested a Vietnamese man dressed as a monk yesterday for attempting to smuggle more than 2kg of ya ice (crystal methamphetamine) into Thailand.

Smuggling suspect dies in Chiang Rai clash

BANGKOK: -- A clash on Wednesday afternoon between paramilitary rangers and armed men allegedly smuggling drugs at the border area in Chiang Rai's Mae Fa Luang district led to one suspect's death, while the rangers seized 3.5 kilograms of heroin and 2,000 yaba pills.

As senior officials inspected the scene of the clash in Mae Salong Nok subdistrict Thursday, Colonel Watcharapong Kaewjaeng, commander of Pha Muang’s Special Force 31, said he had been instructed to bring rangers to stake out the area after a tip that illegal drugs would be smuggled through Chiang Rai. When the rangers came across the armed men, they signalled for the suspects to stop and let them search their sacks. He said the suspects opened fire first, resulting in a 10-minute gunfight, before the suspects retreated.

The rangers later found the body of an unnamed suspect and found the heroin, yaba and a grenade in his sack. Police were investigating the identity of the deceased.
