Travel Insurance for 78 yr old Thai grandmother

Hi

In order for my girlfriend's 78 year old mother to obtain an Australian Visitor's Visa she requires travel insurance for the week she's going to be out there.

Her age is proving a problem - the usual online providers (even Senior Citizens specialists) are coming back with a 65 year old cut-off point.

Was wondering how others have dealt with this. Obviously we aren't the first as this appears to be mandatory.

Would appreciate any advice on Thai insurance providers that could be worth a shot.

Many thanks

Richard

I would check up on that if I was you. When my partner used to come to aust on tourist visas no insurance was required (it was recommended though). I think there may be a requirement for older people to have a health check but not mandatory insurance. We are also in the process of getting a tourist visa for my partners mum and there has been no mention of insurance as a requirement.

This aig.com is something to consider.

However, their second table for days of coverage is unclear--how they count days from first to 180?

I don't see how the table could be any clearer: There are four levels of coverage (shown in the first table). The second table shows the cost of coverage for each of the four levels - depending on where (inside or outside of Asia) and for how many days you will be traveling. As a note, however, the first two plans with the most coverage (A and B) have an age limit of 75 years, whereas the two lower level plans (C and D) have an age limit of 85 years.

In the case of the original poster who wants coverage for his girlfriend's grandmother for a week: Looking at the left hand column of the second table, we can see that the most appropriate choice is a period of 7-10 days. Since the destination is Australia, then the rates for "Worldwide" would apply. On that line, the cost of worldwide coverage ranges from 1,830 baht for the fancy policy to 395 baht for the simple policy.

For what it's worth, I usually go for Plan D, the cheapest one, because it covers just medical issues. The other more expensive plans cover travel-related things such as loss of or damage to possessions, etc., which I don't need. In that way, I get coverage for my 5 week annual vacation for a mere 758 baht. Cheap enough that I wouldn't consider going without it.
