We recently rented our pick up out to a couple, they have brought it back with extremely high kilos on. Have decided to have a GPS tracker fitted, seems quite a cheap and good service available in Thailand. Does anyone know any companies actually located on Samui that provide supply and installtion? What the approximate cost is including subscription?

Thanks in advance

They are available over the internet a good one about 2,500bt easy to install. Then you put a sim card in call it and it will call back to your phone with the location this cost's 30bt per month for 30 sms. It's extremly accurate as it's GPS related.

You can also buy them in Pantip Plaza in Bangkok for around 1000 Tbht.

They come with a spare battery and work in the same way as John has said, very small, easy to hide and magnetic.

The only drawback I can see with these is the battery only lasts about 3 days before they need re-charging or changing the battery.

The 2,500bt one's wire into the car battery on full time and draws very little current won't flatten the battery.

Thanks for replies, am specifically looking for a company on Samui that provides a real time tracking product, where I can set boundaries (the Island) and get instant notifications to my phone when this boundary is crossed, they can even notify if there is a sudden acceleration/decelaration, speeding etc. There is a company in Bangkok (suppliers of hardware) but they then recommend a company on Samui for installation, would rather just go direct. A Thai man who had a rental company here said it cost him 8000bht per car per year to have this service, but have not seen him around for a while to ask where he got it from.

Thanks

Big Brother coming in through the back door.

That's how it all starts ... where it all ends is very clear.

But obviously the people WANT total surveillance ... who would blame the NSA for anything ???

Found a shop by default, cost is 6900 baht including installation and 1 year coverage. coverage is then 1200 baht per year. Could have got the 2900 baht plus cost per SMS but I have to text the car for whereabouts, I actually want to be notified automatically so this was not for me.

For 6900 you get

realtime tracking on google maps

instant alerts for: crossing set boundaries, hard acceleration/deceleration, speeding, tampering with device

remote engine cut off

free SMS

Smart phone app

In car microphone so you listen to the talking (good for accidents)

Data stored for one year.

A few other things but my Wife has difficulty explaining, or can't be bothered to.

Will repost once fitted and up and running.

All of what you have listed there is available on the one I said was 2,500bt. Must have been a slick salesman.

But I want the program where I can view constantly, as I understand the 2500 baht relies on sms and sim card. I have to sms the car to find the specific location at any time, notifictions come in via sms. On the other hand the more expensive model I can open the program/app and see the car travelling, updating every few seconds, data/internet connected. This system is not dependant on sms, it is a free option (can be blocked) and requires no sim card or top ups for additional info.

These systems I can purchase for 2500 and 6500 respectively on the Internet myself, so they are putting a 400 baht mark up for installation at this shop, which I don't mind as at least if something is faulty I have somewhere to go to try and fix it.

Please tell me this system you are installing has no SIM card can you give me the brand and model number as I will replace mine if it work's without a sim card.

Must have sim to send/receive mobile data. Unless 'sim' is hardware version inside the device(similar to air card), but then you'd still need a data package (GPRS is good enough) from a Thai provider. And if the car is in a remote area without reception it won't tell you where it is. There are systems for ships on the market. But they communicate via satellite. Very expensive...

Will do, getting installed at 1pm today fingers crossed, they have already cancelled on me once !

Must be the hardware version then, as I just have to pay 1200 baht per year after initial 6900 baht outlay. The reason I went for this product as there was no 'per sms', per month or top up needed, constantly feeding info. So probably the communication of ...'do I need a sim card ?'.....'no sim card'

this should be interesting when I see the product/device ! Maybe they supply a prepaid sim inside ?

If there is no SIM card involved then another "medium" probably is being used such as trunk radio (used for example over a Motorola two-way radio system, used a lot with large fleets that already have a radio system in place) or satellite (e.g. SX1 or PDT-100). There are also passive systems available where they record every position while the vehicle is away on the road and then the data get dumped back to the computer system when the device reaches a WiFi hot spot or gets back to the HQ.

Another alternative would have been to fit a dashcam. This would not only prove where the car has been; it provides evidence in case of accident too.

(I realise some drivers could tamper with the SD card but if the OP is renting regularly it's worth considering).

Posted

you mean a transmitting live dashcam, so that the owner can see the renters driving live? Is it available with mic and speaker? so that the owner can give proper commandos? and e-shocks?

Well has a sim card, Ais. All wired up, sent sms, worked twice now busy, so can't get through. So that is not working. Put installation disc in, mind boggling stuff.

Now I have seen model number and the box was able to research said product, found on Ebay, 1490 baht. All I really need is something hidden in the car that has a sim, I can then track using an android app for around 1000-1800 baht a year. Going to be interesting when I go back tomorrow and show them the printout from Ebay and that the device does not even work now. Cheeky Ffers, all the price lists that they wrote out was total rubbish.

As I've been telling you from post 2 on they need a sim. Your salesman is really a piece of B/s.

Still not fully functioning yet, stopped the SMS for now as I want realtime tracking. The installer showed me the invoice, system cost 3500bt with 1200bht credit on AIS 3g, so am paying 3400 bht for installation and support. This system connects to the doors and alarm system, has lots of wires that need to be hidden, they have done a good job as it is a right pain in the axxx to remove all the dashboard and door linings etc. So I might have been a bit hasty to condemn the pricing, as they are still assisting me via the shop in Bangkok to set up the system to my requirements, and is still on going. Won't disclose the name and location of the shop until I am fully up and running Will update post at a later date.

AG.

You're gonna need a long cable for that.

Real time tracking is feasible with a good GPRS data plan that allows the device to report back whenever needed (configured). It all boils down to how much you are willing to invest..

The prepaid sim of 1200bht on AIS allows GPRS connection for 1 year apparently, was supplied by the company that installs these systems in Bangkok. However sms messages are extra, this facility I only want set for when a car leaves the island and want immediate notification where ever I am. When they first activated it, I was getting sms every two minutes to tell me the car was moving !!! That would be an expensive way to do it !

I doubt that 1200bht a year will be your only cost for GPRS, that looks like the fixed subscription fee of 100baht/month.

Realtime tracking transfers somewhere between 300-500 megabyte of data per month which I don't think you will get for 100bht.

Who is going to receive the GPRS data, you? How are you going to process it?

Realtime tracking usually means that a service company receives the data to their server and presents it to the customer on a web page, often overlayed on a google earth map. They won't do that free of charge.

All working well, can open the interactive map on www.gpstrackerxy.com and can see where the cars are. Can set alerts straight to computer through this host, if you go on that website you can see an example of how it works. Will update after I have had a chance to set it all up.

Yes that will work ok I have the 102 model for last 3 years works fine but after 1st year could not connect to the web site so just use the sms method It's very accurate will give location normally within 10-15mts unless located in underground car park. . The chinese supplier kept changing there settings. You might have more luck with this vendor.
