Hello,

I am on a retirement extension. I want to get a Thai Driver's License. The American embassy charges quite a bit of money, I forget how much, to give a letter verifying address. I read on the forum that I can get the required proof at the Immigration Office. Is anyone familiar with the procedure to do this? And is there a fee? I plan to do it while I am there for my 90 day report.

Thank you.

I was told that Immigration Office form should be the one....but then on the sticks where we are there isnt one near by..nor the embassy...

(we live in Chaiyaphum, rather rural area.)

We checked with the driving licence office, or whatever the name is, and the local amphur. Could settle for an amphur paper for address verification, i think it set me back for 500thb, quite a good deal for a lot less hassle and lot less spending.

The papers were accepted, and all went well, driving licence issued no problem.

All around 4 months ago, so, recently enough.

It really depends where you are in Thailand. If you have Thai friends or partner get them to contact your local license office and ask them what they will accept.

My wife did this for me and I had a letter from the next village administration which is in charge of our village write a letter and this was accepted. There was no cost involved. Good luck

Go to your local Amper 'Town Hall' they will issue you with the right paper work as before no charge but a tip go's a long way.

Great answers from everyone. Thank you very much. It looks like it will be a lot easier and simpler than I had thought.

Follow up. The ampeur told me to get a document from the apartment building owner stating that I was a resident. It took a few months and one re-run because of a discrepancy with the address, but with that document, everything went smoothly. Ampeur for a document, then to the license bureau.

Thanks again.

Depend upon which Immigration office. Some are 200, 300 or 500 THB, and some are even free. In addition to your passport and photo I would suggest you take a copy of a utility bill or lease, just to be safe . Just remember you will need one for a car license and another one for a motorcycle license

Pattaya DLT accepts one original and one copy - but YMMV at other DLTs.
