Hard To Find Workers

hi guys

i dont know if any one else has this problem but i find it veray hard to get staff in pattaya. i have lots of workers come and go all the time. i am lucky to have some that have been with me for over a year but most move on after a few months. ok i know bar girls come and go but i talking receptionists maids. when i came to thailand i thought staff would be the least of my problems but i find geting staff veray hard. they go for all sorts of reasons to go back home/ to become bar girls/ and just bored of work. i find the the work ethic in thailand veary hard to get to grips with is it just me i dont think i am a bad guy to work for. i leave the wife to manage most things and shes veray jie yen yen with the staff and works as hard as them.

i am now looking for 2 receptionists to work two shifts from 9.30 am to 5pm and 3pm to 10.30 pm thats a 7 and a half hour day. the pay is 6000 thai baht a month and one day of a week

Maybe if you raise the wage a little bit, you will have less trouble finding and keeping staff. You also can think of benifits like housing or transport from home to work.

I don't know how much you earn yourself, but 6000 a month is maybe a salary wich many Thai people get, but I think it's not much especially when your staff lives in pattaya too.

Don't worry, try to get staff upcountry. It's hard no matter how much you offer. they just don't want a job in the location. It's confusing as there seems to be so much unemployment around the place and i'm looking for professional people. Once they hear it's out side Bangkok they aren't interested. I've been offering more than the Bangkok salary as well.

S'truth ! I know people working for 4,500 a month.

There are 4 people living in my building that work at a Hot Pot restaurant. They were making 180 baht a day (one recently got a raise to 200/day, or around 5,400 a month.)

I'll ask around though, try to find some more "reliable" types

Allthough the salery is okey, in many factories in Bangkok and other places they can get lots of OT. When clever they end up easily on 10.000 baht a month included overtime. Next to that food and housing is common sponsored or cheap near factories.

Maybe you can solve the problem with just giving OT...

Try to find staff up-country, ask your wife to contact somebody back home to go looking for staff.

Advance them the bus-fare, offer them accomodation/food and a small starting salary (e.g. 4500/month), but with regular rises as they get trained and stay on...

It's much easier if they live in-house and come straight from the boonies! They don't really know the place, don't have friends etc... to pull them away to another job...

To be honest, 5-6000 sounds more like a wage for domestics/restaraunt workers etc - i.e the lowest level. I would have thought receptionists with some responsibility would have been paid a little bit more. (But there again I was never a cheap skate - what's a grand or two if you've got good reliable workers; worth a lot more than that in the long run.)

Location, and the attendant transport and accommodation costs are pretty key.

My wifes brother and his wife both work at a factory, about 20kms outside Pattaya, and they make over 20,000 Baht between them per month. (including OT).

thanks for all the replys the staff do get extra in the way of tips and if they work a day off. and i do ask staff to do ot when other staff are sick or i am just short staffed. it can bump the pay up to as much as 8000 some months. i think that also because they need to talk and read/write english a ittle bit that a lot of girls from up country dont. i think 6000 is a reasonable rate because i am not a big hotel and the job is not that taxing really. i also pay social fund for them and tax which gets them free hospital care

6,000 is too low for a qualified english speaking representative in Pattaya. I'd look more at paying 10k+/mo if it's a ful-time job. If you want university skills, except to pay 15+k/mo.

Educated guesses:

Domestic hotel workers . . probably aroun 5000 a month, plus tips

low level bank worker - 7-8000

higher level . c12-15000

branch manager . . 25-35000

street copper . .I think I read it was around 9,000 (plus 90,000 in bribes)

thai school teacher . . depends on seniority but 15-25,000

english teacher . . . 25,000-40,000 (more for elite places)

waitress . . . 6-7000

hotel front office 8-12000

etc etc

Office and clerical employees is too wide a range. I know office people earning as little as7-8000 a month. I have some people in my office earning 40,000. depends on their skill sets i guess.

Note I am not the only one that told you for a receptionist the numbers you quoted was a little low ... not crazy low .. but low none the less.

I didn't bother vetting the person you quoted ... nor do we the readers know what is included in your benefits package ... but hel_l ... there are people that will suffer through staff changeovers all the time because they don't want to pay a little more.

i think these are exceptions to the rule and bangkok is not veray repetitional of the rest of thailand.

i only know bar girls that make 80k a month i am not looking for someone with a uni degree just some one who can understand english and is reliable. i also think uni degrees and the whole thai education system a bit spurious. a case of who you know not what you know when they leave uni so i have been told. i know many bar girls with uni degrees who tell they can not find work in what they trained for just my two cents

IT Security Specialist is not the norm though and there are not many position in each company.

IT guys are more likely to be on between 30 and 40 K THB

Even a lot of IT jobs in Singapore are only paying up to 3500 Sing Dollars which is approx 75K THB.

These are not the real top notch specialists though but the majority.

This may not be on target, but I would be surprised if its very far off. The problem of your staff turnover may be more to do with either your GF/Wifes or your own management style. You would be surprised how much this matters to Thai's often more so than the actual salary - if you have had people accept the salary and start, its probably sufficient, however if they dont stay its generally because the 'karma' for lack of a better word is not good in their minds.

how ever we all suffer from poor service in the service industry

the poor level of english needs to be addressed.............. try the phone , power,water companys

ok ... looking at the OP again ... one would guess the guy runs a hotel since he mentions receptionists and maids .... he's paying 6k/mo and told it's a little low but not crazy low ....

so he pulls up a list ... and on that list it mentions hotel domestics <maids>5k+tips ...

and hotel front office 8-12 .... Receptionists ?

note .. as said before I think the list is skewed in areas

Define "good english". If you're happy with bargirl-english then your budget is not far off, but if you want proper english you can double your offer and still have difficulties finding one.

I would say that Digger may have hit the nail on the head. My gf left a receptionist job after a month or so. When I asked why, the boss, who happened to be the owners wife. spoke to all the staff as if they were something that she had trod in When I ask what she want from her job she said only nice people to work with, the salary didn't seem so important. Maybe you should watch how your wife/gf is with the staff. From what i can tell a bit of respect goes a long way.

I don't know if this is worth a try but i believe the staff at Seven Eleven's are paid pretty poorly. Someone mentioned a couple of months ago that they are on about 3,500 to 4,ooo baht a month. Try a few out (there are surely enough of them around) and if you see someone serving who fits the bill, with customer service and English etc........... poach her
