AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: Restraints urged to ensure rights are protected during mass rallies

Featured Replies

Blah Blah Blah...do they realize, how ridiculous, they sound to Thai people? Thai people don't take advise, suggestions or orders from outside the Country.

The suggestions are all good, but Amnesty International has no rights, or power in Thailand whatsoever.

Their heart is in the right place, but they should do their research before they open their mouth. wai2.gif

Not true at all. In the 70ies the U.S. airforce wanted to install airbases for bombing Laos and Vietnam, and Thailand agreed in the aggression of his neighbour.

Well:

Thailands elites was scared of the communists

USA gave a lot weapons and training for free

The soldiers came with buckets full of money and inject it in the economic, pushing Thailand forward

USA is a scary enemy

Most probably the USA greased the decision

Thailand (but also most other countries) love to show power against their neighbors

Amnesty International can do what?

They can posture up ready to go like everyone else, like Italian footballers at the world cup ready to hit the floor in front of the cameras if it gives you leverage in the game.

USA is a scary enemy.

There is a real risk of loss of life and injury unless human rights are fully respected, said Isabelle Arradon, Amnesty Internationals Asia-Pacific Deputy Director. Security forces should ensure that the right to peaceful protest is upheld; however, they also have a duty to protect the safety of the public.

When carrying out their work, law enforcement officials should apply non-violent means before resorting to the use of force, and always exercise restraints in its use. The authorities must also uphold peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of expression by protecting media workers from harassment and intimidation.

According to which law or standard?

Amn int'l needs to understand there is no recognisable court here, and no official law enforcement with real leadership- on paper (in a bottle maybe 55), before issuing such crap.

-m.

In reality, if people block the street,,a court issues an order to clear them out, then they should be cleared.

No electricity, no water, no stages. If they don't go, non lethal stuff, water cannon, teat gas. But the moment they attack back or use weapons. All bets are off.

Disobeying an officer is an offence.

A.friend just put up a picture of chaengwattana. There is a row of a and bags 6ft high on the road. How the hell.do you just get permission to put it up.

But please tell me the true, does who care at all of AI's advise/warning/recommendation in TH ??? And in the world ??? No-one who has to care.

This is a newest big hullaballoo for nothing.

".... urged to ensure rights .... "

Oh la la.

Much better the Holy Bible and the Ten Commandments. Same power.

Yet another uninformed comment. AI has over 3 million members worldwide, including high profile politicians who assist in their campaigns at government to government level. AI campaigns have been instrumental in facilitating the release of thousands of prisoners held by repressive governments around the world and in many cases tortured.

AI has also been active in other issues that have been recognised and implemented by UN Conventions, that have been ratified and signed by many countries.

Whilst it is unlikely that the Thai parties will act upon calls for moderation by AI & the UN, at least it is better than complete silence & reported in the international media to which some pay heed.

Do you reckon the thai army would have been capable of stopping an invasion from the communist states ?

They would have been in Kuala Lumpur in a week.

KL ? How long has that been in Vietnam? The communist insurgency in Malaysia was stopped in the 60's.

As a side, issue, the Malaysian Armed Forces are well equipped, trained and professional. I wouldn't think they'd be the pushover you suggest. When was the last time the Thai army fought against a real opposition ?

The organization has also urged all protest leaders to call on their followers not to commit human rights abuses.

They have correctly identified the flashpoint.

It will be interesting to see if Suthep takes this advice although i won't be surprised if he doesn't.

He needs violence in some form or another in order to set up the conditions for a coup.

Complete bullshit from the flaming troll and the National Office of Thaksin propaganda, same as ever.

It is the red shirts particularly that will be the 'flash point'. The reds have already picked a fight in Lamlukka in which an innocent student just walking down the street was shot, sprayed bullets at sleeping protestors and the coffee shop at the Dems office. Protestors have been simply protesting. So stop with the crap and let's stick to the facts Jack !

Is this dumb B@#%$ suggesting tha Amnesty International supports Terrorists Activities? Shutting down a city and cutting electricity and water and causing jams to other citizens is not peaceful protests. These protesters need to be dealt withas terrorists! Whichever protesters be it yellow, red or white, anyone who does acts like tehse are categorised as terrorists.

Remind me to never support Amensty International again! Must have eroded into a dumb organisation.

Has your water stopped ? No ? Mine neither. Has your electricity stopped ? No ? Mine neither. Has your internet stopped ? No ? Mine neither. They are protesting peacefully and sadly affecting traffic, go a different route, you know where they are so don't go that way, or use the MRT and BTS and put up with the crowds..
