Obviously a Dr /clinic is your first recourse.I hope it is nothing serious ,you state it is only one hand ,might help the dr if you take along any medicines, chemicals etc,is your friend exposed by occupation like dry cleaners, nurses or industrial workers to hazardous materials?

Good luck

It looks indeed like bruises, or else discoloration as a result of contact with silver in some form.

If it is bruises and there is no history of any injury that would account for it, coagulation disorders may need to be ruled out (if so there would usually be signs elsewhere on the body as well, for example gums bleeding easily after brushing teeth).

If it is not bruises and there has been no contact with silver or medication containing silver/other metals, , then Kaposi sarcoma is one possibility (and a serious one, usually a sign of AIDs). Usually with Kaposi there will be some raised nodules as well as bruise-like discoloration.

Would help to know if it is at all tender when palpated, and if any nodules present.
