A bunch of Songkhla hashers (about 20) are in town this weekend for a wedding of one (two?) of their number and have asked whether Ubon Hash can set a run for them on Saturday afternoon.

So no, Ubon hashers, you are not misreading, we will have two hashes on consecutive weekends! If you missed the excellent event at Viking Ghettomaster's last weekend here's a chance to catch up with Ubon Hash in home territory.

Come one and all to the joint Ubon/Songkhla hash, starting at 4pm prompt on Saturday 18th January, starting from the car park of the Pathumrat hotel, Chayangkhul Road, central Ubon*. It promises to be a boozy and social affair with the Songkhla guys and gals keen to see what Ubon has by way of light entertainment in the evening following the hash. You don't have to be an existing member of either hash either, just turn up

The trail will be an A (Pathumrat Hotel, where Songkhla hashers are staying) to B - a hostelry well-known to Ubon Hash - trail. I can't promise you a hash that covers territory we Ubonites have not hashed before - because my main trail design aim was to give our Southern guests a good sight of Ubon centre, its parks, wats, Mun river and fringe village life. Many of you will probably have guessed where end of trail B will be then! Transport will be provided from B back to A at some stage in the early evening's proceedings.

There will be a beer stop on the run. There will be some free snack food at the end. There will be the usual circle - probably a bit longer than usual in view of numbers. Later on there will be a visit to at least one more Hash hostelry and possibly more food and dancing and definitely more bb..beeer thereafter.

Sorry for the late notice - as some will have seen on the Thai Visa website - this has been a late-arising affair.

A great event in the offing - be there!

PS: If anyone would like to do the Songkhla Full Moon Hash on Friday evening out at Tan Sum (Phibun area, north of the Mun river I beleive), we have been invited; PM me for details.

*Pathumrat Hotel is on the north-bound carriageway of Chayangkul. Chayangkul is the main drag coming up from Warin and going up past Tesco to Big C. Pathumrat is about 300 meters further north from Robinsons Department store

Hashing is social running and there have been hash clubs all over the world since its 1930s origins in Kuala Lumpur. The running bit is not taken seriously and beer is drunk to oil the social side. Ubon Hash, in line with the Ubon environment is laid back and only a few experienced hashers and wanabee enthusiasts put in a few spurts of running. The rest walk. Non-running social members who like to drink beer rather than take any exercise are welcome provided they pay the hash fee and don't drink all the beer while the rest of us are out on trail!

A trail is laid, typically in white powder like flower/chalk and the pack has to find the trail, which keeps the front runners busy while the walkers catch up. After the run the beer ice-boxes are opened and the socialising begins. We usually go back for some more beer and maybe some food around town in the early evening, and some more beer later in the evening, but that is entirely optional on your part! {the latter bit is modified of course when we are out-stationed, when anything goes}.

Don't be a stay at home wuss - get out there with us and discover the sides of Ubon you would not normally uncover. It's dead cheap (100B) for your first run and inexpensive (200B) thereafter; even cheaper for Thais - and that includes free beer after, and sometimes during, the run.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yes - you are right - it is normally first Saturday of the month. But we had two in January, with the last one being only a couple of weeks ago. So I 'm deferring the next run until next Saturday 8th of February. Details to come.

Sorry if that means you will miss out.

I would have advised against it too (I stayed at T House!). I think they got a very good group deal, but I heard a few grumbles about the lack of hot water etc. Good weekend otherwise for them though I believe. Hashers tend to be really pi$$ed off if the beer is not cold but little else phases them.

Posting for this weekend's hash is coming up. You guys will be very welcome. We are keen to have a hash run in Sisaket from time to time, so it would be good to establish contact with a few likely types.
