BANGKOK: -- A passer-by was attacked and injured by anti-government protesters near the rally site at the Lat Phrao intersection yesterday, the Public Health Ministry reported. The man was later admitted to Paolo Hospital.

Separately, a police officer was injured by a People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) security guard near the Pathum Wan intersection rally site, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the condition of a PDRC guard who was shot in the neck on Monday near Chaeng Wattana Soi 14 improved slightly.

The ministry also reported that an 87-year-old patient with diabetes was sent by helicopter to undergo treatment at the Police Hospital.

To date, three people have been killed and about 188 injured in political violence during the past two months. About 15 of the injured are still in hospitals in Bangkok.

To handle casualties during the political turmoil stemming from the PDRC's campaign to shut down Bangkok, the ministry has prepared 13 mobile emergency medical services teams with basic and advanced life-support equipment. They are on standby around the clock at the demonstration sites at the Lat Phrao intersection and Victory Monument and can send people who need emergency care to nearby hospitals.

As protesters plan to block several ministries including Labour, Science and Technology, Industry, Foreign Affairs and Commerce, the Health Ministry has also set up mobile medical teams to take people injured in political protests to nearby hospitals.

Members of the public are urged to call the 1669 hotline to receive medical services.

Meanwhile a double-decker bus parked near the protest site was also damaged in what the driver said was an arson attack. The bus carried protesters from the South to join the mass protest in Bangkok.

The most serious case was reported near Hua Charng bridge or near the Pathumwan intersection where several thousands of protesters were rallying to oust the care taker prime minister.

Gunshots were fired by unknown number of gunmen into the security guards of the protesters at about midnight forcing passers-by, security guards, and protesters near the bridge to run for cover.

Guards said the gun shots were fired from either the overhead BTS sky train station and tall building nearby.

The gunshots were fired periodically but in aseries for half and hour.

One security guard and two protesters were injured. They were admitted to Chulalongkorn hospital.

Meanwhile ping pong bombs were also thrown into the security guards of the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand (NSPRT)last night. But there was no injury. Throughout the night till dawn, explosions were heard neasr where the gusrds stayed to ensure safety for protesters.

In another related incident, a double-decker bus parked in front of the Narng Lerng horse race course was also attacked by arsonist.

The bus catched fire on its rear tires and door. However security guards of the race course helped to put out the fire before it engulfed the whole bus.

The driver said he and his passengers came from Phatthalung province to join the NSPRT protest to oust the prime minister since Sunday

He said he was sleeping inthe bus and smelled smoke from behind. He immediately rushed the bus and saw a car driving out immediately. He strongly believed the arson attack was from the anti-government protest motive.

The main difference between the reds & this Democrat mob is not the level of violence the protesters are prepared to use, but the extent of the suppression used by the government. As we saw at Din Dang, as soon as the authorities attempted to resist the mob's illegal activities, they resorted to shooting & throwing ping pong bombs.

BANGKOK, January 15, 2014 (AFP) - Two people were wounded in a shooting at an opposition rally in the Thai capital Wednesday, authorities said, as protest leaders prepared to march through plush city neighbourhoods in their bid to oust the premier.

The demonstrators, backed by the kingdom's royalist establishment, want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign to make way for an unelected "people's council" that would oversee reforms to curb the political dominance of her billionaire brother Thaksin.

A man and a woman were taken to hospital with minor wounds after shots were fired shortly after midnight on the fringes of the protesters' main "shutdown" base in Bangkok's commercial heart, according to the city's Erawan emergency centre.

Both were discharged overnight. Local reports said they were a garbage man and a protester. Television footage showed dozens of shots fired by unknown gunmen.

Several people -- including a policeman -- have been killed by unidentified assailants since the protests began more than two months ago.

Late on Tuesday a makeshift explosive device -- either a small bomb or a firecracker -- was also hurled at a house belonging to the family of opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is also a former prime minister, but nobody was injured, according to police.

Abhisit's Democrat Party is boycotting elections called by Yingluck for February 2.

The protest group said their firebrand leader Suthep Thaugsuban, a former deputy prime minister, would lead a march through several upscale Bangkok neighbourhoods while other demonstrators would besiege more government departments.

However, it distanced itself from a threat by a hardcore anti-government faction to seize air traffic control or the Thai stock exchange.

"Any disturbance to citizens and foreign tourists will be as minimal as possible," it said.

Suthep threatened late Tuesday to take the prime minister and several cabinet ministers captive if they do not resign.

The former Democrat lawmaker is renowned for his blustery rhetoric, but the threat reflects an air of impunity surrounding rally leaders who have not been detained despite warrants for their arrest.

Protesters blocked key intersections in the capital for a third straight day Wednesday, but there was more traffic on the roads, in a possible sign that the attempted "shutdown" was losing momentum.

The rallies were triggered by a failed amnesty bill that could have allowed Thaksin to return despite a jail term for a past corruption conviction.

The tycoon-turned-politician has strong electoral support in northern Thailand, but he is reviled by many southerners, Bangkok's middle class and members of the royalist establishment.

They're classified as fireworks (bangers), Colourful ping pong sized spheres, with a fuse sticking out. Light the fuse and wait....then bang. If you're hit by one when it bangs, it does damage. There's hard plastic pentagonal shrapnel. Readily available at any firework shop.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Suthep or these protesters either (bunch of self-righteous loudmouths with tunnel vision), but I wish people would stop comparing this mob to the reds in 2010. They're nowhere near as violent. Given the fact that isn't just "two days" as the previouis poster stated, but has been going on for months, the total casualties are in the single digits.

Will this still hold true in the coming weeks? We'll see. But right now, they've been relatively behaved considering the numbers they have.
