WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated veteran diplomat Matthew Tueller to fill an open ambassadorship in Yemen, succeeding Gerald Feierstein who ended his tenure late last year after serving three years in the war-torn country.

The White House said Obama had nominated Tueller and sent his nomination to the U.S. Senate for confirmation. Tueller currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Kuwait, a post which he has held since September 2010, but other positions on his resume include Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and Political Minister Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

"I am honored that these talented individuals have decided to join this Administration and serve our country," Obama said on Thursday as he announced a number of nominations, which included Tueller's nomination. "I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come."

If confirmed by the Senate, Tueller will succeed Feierstein who ended his tenure in September 2013.
