Hi all, I searched for a couple hours but couldn't find the answer.

I am 26 years old, and have been in Phuket for 27 days. I am here on the 30 day no-visa-required pass. I am a citizen of the US, and flew here from Sydney, Australia. I have decided I want to stay in Thailand for at least 7 months. I will not be working, and have more than adequate finances. I have to go to Ranong on Monday to get a new 30 day stamp.

My questions: Am I able to get a visa while in Thailand? What kind should I get? If I can't get a visa while here, is it possible to do a border run 7 times (every month) and keep getting 30 day no-visa stamps?

Thanks in advance!

1. No. You can not obtain a visa inside Thailand.

2. You could obtain a visa outside Thailand, on a trip to Malaysia for example.

3. You can make border crossings for 30 day stamp as long as the crossing allows you to do so. That may be for all 7 months but could change at any time.

Must have at least 21 days remaining on the 30 day stamp to change it. In your case it cannot be retirement, marriage( I surmise you are not married to a Thai) It could be on a investment visa if you invest 3 million Baht ion a Thai state bank or new condo. You also could qualify if you were a full time student.

You could do monthly visa runs as well or get a 60 day tourist visa ( extend it for 30 more days in Thailand)

How would I go about doing this? Do I go to the immigration office in Phuket town and apply, or do I go to Malaysia and do it from there? How long would this take? Sorry for all of the questions, and thanks again.

You travel to Penang in Malaysia (it's an island not far from the border with Thailand) and apply at the Royal Thai Consulate (or have one of the many visa services in Georgetown city take care of it for a small fee which is usually less that taxi fares to do it yourself). You submit in morning before noon and pick up next workday after 2 PM. There is air/bus and rail connections and maybe even boat from Phuket. Normal connection city is Hat Yai if doing indirect travel. You would apply for a two or three entry tourist visa. Two entry would cover up to six months stay with the two allowed extensions of 30 days (done at immigration). That would require one border crossing for the 6 months.
