Don't know how it is elsewhere but in the U.S. they rip up hundreds upon hundreds of acres at a crack to build tract homes in what was once farmland. Small towns with independent grocers, hardware stores, restaurants, video rentals, are forced out of business when the strip malls arrive with the usual <deleted> <deleted> - Handy Andy's, Menards, McD's, Burger King, Blockbuster Video, Pizza Hut, Wal-Mart, Target, Jewel Foods, on and on and on.
