webfact
Russians caught-up in Pattaya Jet Ski ScamPATTAYA: -- Despite numerous assurances from the local authorities that Jet Ski Scams were being dealt with, they continue to occur on a regular basis and appear to involve local authority workers. In the early hours of Sunday 5 Russians aged between 22 and 27 were taken to Pattaya Police Station by a Thai friend, who encouraged the men to report the alleged scam which saw them pay a total of 113,000 Baht for alleged damage caused to 5 Jet Ski’s they had rented on Pattaya Beach just after 4pm on Saturday afternoon. When the men returned to the beach the Jet Ski Operators claimed that each of the Jet Ski’s had sustained damage and demanded the money be paid to cover the cost of repairs. Initially the men refused to pay until two men in brown uniforms arrived who looked similar to Police Officers. They were later identified as Pattaya City Security Officers who have no powers of arrest but warned the men that they would be arrested if they did not pay the money.Full story: http://www.pattayaone.net/pattaya-news/116484/russians-caught-up-in-pattaya-jet-ski-scam/-- Pattaya One 2014-01-27

Andre0720
Maybe the problem is that the salty H2O sea water in Pattaya is the hard water H2O2 version. No way to take a ride whithout some form of damage... ...
Popular Post alfalfa19
Let's hope for the the scammers sake, that they havent pissed off the wrong Russians I would hope for exactly the opposite. Of course, I would never advocate the bumping off of several of these jet ski cockroaches, I'm just saying that lesser actions would have no impact on them.
laurentbkk
Lets hope the Russian will continue to go to pattaya otherwise Pattaya can go bankrupt soon ..... makkam
Any non thai going to places like pattaya or Phuket should be issued with a brochure of things not to do or procure as they get on the plan.Let them know the police are in on these scams and they'll get zilch support in the event they get involved The perpetrators of these scams would be on the breadline in weeks

Brevity
2 men who dressed similar to police appeared and threatened them and forced them to pay the indemnity . . . you mean THE POLICE who run or are involved in providing protection for every dam_n thieving scam in Thailand. Come on, say it as it is. They probably learned that careful wording in Russia, where the problem of police corruption is apparently as bad as or worse than Thailand. Sort of like, "Excuse me good and nice police, but someone who has a gall to dress like you just ripped me off. Of course, I know that the police are very honest, so it must have been someone impersonating you fine, honest and upstanding gentlemen."
lostmebike
'However, the police will give fairness to both of the 2 litigants but if the officers found that the traces of damage of 5 jet skies were not reasonable with the indemnity that the jet ski owner and 2 municipal officers sought for was too greedy from the tourists then they will be prosecuted according to the Thai law as it ruined the image of Pattaya.' (from Pattaya Daily News) What image? You mean the sleazy, anything goes but bring your wallet image??? Funny how ALL 5 jet skis were damaged at the same time, they must have been playing that 'high-speed, jet ski shunting'. How I love that game
Popular Post Piichai
113,000 baht on just 1 scam??? and it's probably just encouraged by the mafia police they are in collusion with??!! Nice money, if you can get it??!! With tourist numbers dropping, there are fewer sheep to fleece. Thus the Thais must raise their prices, as per usual.
Popular Post siddv
When is the Russian mafia finally going to put an end to this scam and take all the business for themselves?? It would be like taking candy from a baby and I'm surprised they have allowed this farce to go on for as long as it has. The Thai authorities are obviously not going to to a dam thing about it and could care less.

Udox
In the last 6 months - I have witnessed 2 occasions where tourists are in the process of being scammed by the Jet ski's and on both occasions the same municipal officer turned up on his motorbike to appear to be the 'friendly cop' and help the tourists out. How amazing he was at both scamming sessions and just in case anyone else sees this going on - he is an overweight chap - very distinguishable. I advised one group to go to the police station nearby and take the case there as the fat guy is not actually a policeman.

trainman34014
Best way for tourists to solve these problems is not turn up at these places and not hire jet-ski's. Travel Agents, Tour Operators, Airlines Et al should by now be making everyone aware that these places are out of bounds to people who want a happy and carefree holiday. There are thousands of other places for people to go so why not help people avoid these shit holes.
