As someone who has just as many female as male friends in the UK, I'm struggling with the idea that I cannot make female friends easily here in Bangkok - the suggestion being that its almost impossible for thai women to meet up with a guy as friends, its either a date, an affair, business related or not possible. Its just not in their 'make up' or something that is accepted in thai society.

Also realizing the inevitable fits of jealousy from the thai girlfriend may be justified. The last time I stepped out with a thai lady friend (who comes from a very good family) she knocked back the cocktails and 'accosted' me in the lift.

I'm starting to think the only time a thai lady will step out with a man (especially a farang) is because she wants something more - meaning that being friends with a thai woman is a fallacy.

Very possible! I have so many Thai female friends that my "real" Thai GF sometimes gets jealous. Then she meets them and jealousy quickly is over. She realizes they have nothing in common with me other than being good friends.

Her and I try to find boyfriends for them but so far we haven't been successful. The men we meet are better off at a bar. My GF agrees with me that it is really easy to meet women here, when men look in the right places. Both men and women want a better life and a solid relationship. Women look for money, honesty, and security. Men on the other hand are mostly vain looking for eye candy. Most men don't look for personality or brains. At least the ones I've met. And there are many women who are very attractive and have a great personality but usually they are already taken. True in every country.

I have met all my lady friends in the most unlikely places. On a Baht bus, shopping center, on a klong boat going up a river, and a several hotel clerks. All above average in looks and every one college educated. My GF was a hired to cook at a friends party. That was 8 years ago. I say just don't try to hard...they're out there. JMHO...

Do you hang out with them and go to events like you would a guy friend? Do you reveal all aspects of your life with them, including your love life? It is impossible for men to be real friends (not acquaintances, real mates like your drinking buddies back home) with women, period, and any bloke who says otherwise is probably a bit of a mommy's boy . I find insights from female friends on my relationships with other women to be more valid than those from men.

I'm secure enough to not be bothered by my main squeeze seeing a male farang friend regularly - if she's gonna take a portion elsewhere, she's gonna do it whether I try to impose restrictions on her social life or not so what's the point?

Actually, right now, not really. I have had in the past though and they were happy to go out alone with males as friends (and no, I'm not ugly).

Of course it's possible, I've had several. And it's helped me a lot in understanding Thai women as there was no sexual tension getting in the way of my judgement.

One of my very best friends is a Thai lady and we have been very close for 27 years. There has never been one moment between us that was not purely platonic. She has never asked for or taken any money from me. In fact, she is always offering to lend it to me but I never take it also.
