Crime Bangkok Tightens Security After Fire Attack on Tourists

Police have ordered increased vigilance over homeless individuals and beggars in Bangkok’s business districts following a shocking incident in which two Malaysian tourists were set on fire. Police from Division 5 (BMA) held a meeting on 19 August, with business operators in the Ratchaprasong area to discuss enhanced security measures. The meeting, attended by senior officers including Pol Maj-Gen Witawat Chinkham and representatives from major shopping centres such as Big C Ratchadamri, The Market, Gaysorn Plaza and Central World, as well as the Intercontinental Hotel, focused on safeguarding both locals and tourists. The incident occurred on 7 August 2025, when a man doused two Malaysian tourists with thinner and set them alight. Passers-by intervened and apprehended the suspect, who caused serious injuries to the victims. Pol Col Yingyos Suwannono, Superintendent of Lumpini Police Station, said the measures discussed include: 1. Monitoring and providing ongoing support to the injured tourists. 2. Coordinating with local authorities to manage homeless individuals and beggars in the Ratchaprasong area to maintain safety and protect the area’s image. 3. Developing systems to detect, warn and apprehend criminals posing as tourists to commit thefts, scams, or other offences. 4. Using technology, particularly CCTV and AI, to enhance security for visitors. 5. Encouraging public participation in preventing incidents and reporting suspicious activities. 6. Managing traffic efficiently under the “Ratchaprasong Model” to ensure overall safety. These measures aim to create a secure environment for tourists and residents alike while boosting confidence in the area’s safety.
