When Expatriates Meet - First Impressions

This post by ijustwannateach in the gay forum is too funny to leave exclusively there:

We both let out that sign of relief that foreigners in Thailand do when they realise that a foreigner they've been introduced to is neither a sexpat, a tourist, a criminal, a scammer, a sponger, an alcoholic, a pedophile, penniless, homeless, a person of mysterious means, a schizophrenic, a Christian missionary, a hoodlum, a backpacker, nor yet a sanctimonious weirdo who talks about "Thainess."

Too true.

I'm currently working on getting faster and more accurate in this screening process. A few of them can be spotted from fifty feet away; any pointers for speeding up the process with the less obvious ones?

I'm running out of variations for the name, "Don't answer" in my mobile phonebook.

(Left out Soccer Hooligans, wannabe Mercs, burnt-out boozers)

I've met a few TV members over the last couple of years. My first impression(s) has been that they are normal, everyday kind of people.

Haven't socialised with any of them enough to determine if they have less than desirable attributes. :o

<deleted> is "Thainess" ? Is that something like Guiness ? I'm a whiskey kinda guy, so beer references tend to sail past unnoticed.

How often does this happen?

Once every 50 years?

"sign of relief" like <deleted> is that?

The whole post is just camp babble.

So I gotta wonder how do many of you feel when Ijustwannateach says he's relived not to be chatting to a tourist? Are you all not good enough to converse with 'steven' as many of you fall into that catergory?

To be honest sounds to me like he's another expat stuck right up his own ###### who cannot lower himself to talk to anyone aside from other expats like himself. Stupid statement IMO.

I'm the last person to introduce myself, but I'm happy to talk to anyone. As for the article about avoiding certain people, well I'm sure you would avoid them back home. But then again it could be you don't see so many of these strange people back home because they have their bars and you have yours. Or it could be that they don't feel welcome in your favorite places. There are some places in most big cities in the west which pick who can and can't enter.

Anyways if you find yourself around people you don't like too much maybe you are one of them.

I'm pretty sure that there are at least two expats that genuinely did not come here for the women. Of course, they were born with no sex organs! :D

Scuse me UG, but I did not come here for the women and I most certainly have my sexual parts :o .

But, sorry IJWT, I can't agree with avoiding all of those different types, otherwise you wouldn't have too many expats left to talk to! :D

I rarely meet any expats who fall into those categories. I meet the occasional sexpat or "hoodlum" (maybe 1 in 5 of the expats I meet), but I've never met any scammers, spongers, alcoholics, paedophiles, homeless, missionaries, or people talking about Thainess, whatever that is supposed to mean.

And this guy "Just wanna Teach" breathes a sigh of relief if he finds out that he's not talking to someone on holiday here? That strikes me as a very arrogant, unfriendly attitude to take. Fortunately, I don't seem to meet any expats who think like that either...

Wonder how long ppl take to catogorize someone they see or meet. Normally seconds, or minutes at the most I'd say. So quick to stick ppl into little comfortable boxes. Suppose it's a coping mechanism for simple minds... :o

No, I am not american.

But I want to humbly thank you for giving me the opportunity to state the fact publicly that I am not american.

I am not into conspiracy junk.

I have met several cia operatives and Thailand is an 'active' country for americas hidden agendas.

Did you notice the increased flights over thailand around the last election ? Did you know there is a warehouse full of cash from iraq kept under armed guard ? Did you know that there was nowhere near the thousands of deaths from the tsunami and that the americans shipped in bodies from irag and afghanistan that they could not explain and dumped them at sea the next day ?

Shall we get back onto the topic of which undesirable farang we prefer to avoid? :o
