A friend just sent me this . . .

Just found out today during my 90 day check-in that the income statement I got last month in khon kaen (via the US Embassy through their outreach visits) won't work for my renewal in May. Only good for three months, not 180 days, so can be used in Jan. Feb. or Mar.

We were both under the impression, from here at TV and elsewhere that the income statement from the US Embassy was good for six months.

Are we missing something?

You haven't missed anything, but, the botttom line is what the office that you use accepys no matter what the embassy or anyone one this forum tells you! You need to check with the office that you use!

The maximum validity period for Embassy income confirmation letters was increased to 6 months last May, and the edition of Pattaya News attached includes a letter from the Department of Immigration which instructed all immigration offices to accept such letters on this basis in future. It might be worth your while waving a copy of this letter under the nose of the IO who gave you this duff info and, if you get nowhere with them, asking to speak to their boss.

Yes, because making a Thai, especially a government official, loose face is such a wise and productive thing to do. Be prepared for your passport to be the last to be processed that day no matter how early you get to the office and turn in your application.

I think that would be much better than not being able to get an extension on that day and having to rush to Bangkok for a new income document and pay for it again also. .

Yes -much better to kiss ass and keep them on the pedestal that they have become accustomed to.

They are only government grade 6 civil servants - take a higher grade government officer, flash their government ID, and watch the IO kiss butt.

this has been said b4 but the letter states the MAX not the min. each office can add to a requirement or in this case make it more strigent ie 3 months by the way I thought korat was only one month. check embassy sch and see where they will be in 3 mos prior to your visit. if not close its off to the big city you go.

Heaven forbid a farang lose face.

The problem was in the choice of words "waving a copy of this letter under the nose of the IO who gave you this duff info and, if you get nowhere with them, asking to speak to their boss." Waving something in someone's face and demanding to see the boss are just the sort of arrogant tactics that they don't need to deal with. And now we have kissing ass and pedestals thrown in for good measure.

You could print out the letter, show it to someone in the office and ask for their assistance politely. Point out the expense that would be involved in getting a new letter. That's not kissing ass and only some childish, face-saving farang with a great deal of ass-kissing experience would interpret it that way.

Acting like a jerk is not going to impress anyone. Ultimately they have the right to use discretion in dealing with your application and you may have to deal with the same people for many years. If your ego is so fragile that you fear loss of face by acting civilly, then you'll probably end up losing more than face before it's all over.

Now THAT is a much more sensible approach. Somewhat different to the reference to 'paper waiving' in the previous posts.

Nothing wrong at all with the polite approach - invariably brings better results.

This is what letter states in the English translation.

The Validity period of an income verification letter which is issued by the embassy to foreigners should not exceed 6 months from the issuance date

I am sure that Korat has already accepted income affidavits longer than 3 months old since this rule came out. The info mentioned by the OP may of well come from an ill informed officer.

The consular out reach schedules are about 6 months apart for all locations.

Will be in Khorat Immigration office in April for my next 90 day.

I will bring a copy of the document and politely ask if they honor it.

My year is up in July.

I'm hoping to get my new letter from American Services when they are in the area and avoid the Big Mango all together.

But immigration's acceptance of the "new rule" and timing of the American Services visit are important.

( No I haven't confirmed when AS will be here, but they told me last year they do come here and I could avoid going to Bangkok for my letter).

For what it is worth...I've been dealing with the Khorat office for years and have never had a problem there.

I am always polite and so are they.

But...I have seen some rude expats have big problems there.

Just be nice!

The embassy outreach schedule is up on their website.
