thai for metally insane

Featured Replies

Thais love to call people they don't like or understand บ้า (baa) crazy.

I am looking for a more formal word that can be used about somebody that is truly mentally insane and should be pitied, not laughed at.

The problem is to find a word that is formal enough without being so formal and scientific that nobody understands what I am talking about.

Any ideas ? (The word in Thai writing, please.)

Thai2English says:

คุ้มดีคุ้มร้าย
kúm dee kúm ráai

  • [to be] mentally unstable ; erratic ; insane

Whilst 'mentally insane' isn't really 'a thing' (is there a form of insanity that isn't mental?) and mental illness takes many forms, my dictionary has come up with

โรคจิต which may suit your purpose :)

Talking Thai Dictionary lists คลั่ง, คุ้มคลั่ง and สติไม่ดี.

วิกลจริต is listed as a more formal term

If you want to describe somebody with an actual mental illness, this is the word you should use:

โรคประสาท

Unlike all the other words mentioned so far, this one will not carry any negative or "funny" meanings.

Thank you very much. This is exactly what I was looking for.
