Double Pricing On Samui

Recommended Posts

While I share Taxexile's disdain for being cheated, let's consider the reverse situation. I work for a Thai subsidiary of an American corporation. Although I am considered a Thai hire (a person hired from [in] Thailand rather than from abroad), I am paid more as a non-Thai consultant than my Thai counterparts who do equally demanding work, are equally well educated, and with whom I work side-by-side. Frankly, they don't think it's fair that I should be paid more simply because I hold U.S. citizenship, and I'm sure they would offer no sympathy if I were charged more by Will Wait on Samui. Frankly, I thnk this Earth would be a better place if wealth were distributed equitably (we all could be poor!), but given inherent unfairness, I haven't taken to redistributing my salary!

that's an interesting point you raise frogmo1 (not wealth redistribution, which would destroy all incentive to produce wealth in the first place, thats the same as communism,or socialism) but the point about those expats who are paid more than thais for doing the same work.

yes, it is as unfair as double pricing, would you have taken the job for the same rate as a thai?

Absent the alternative, I probably would have, but that's because I enjoy the less stressful work ethic here (did I put that politely enough?). As an expat, I'm afraid I brought with me certain Western values and tastes, which when translated into baht would quickly erode a lesser salary. If paid on a par with the Thais, I would simply have to adopt (and adapt to) a less affluent lifestyle. Maybe it wouldn't be so difficult; I'm not sure.

Talk about double pricing for farangs. What about farang developers & building companies, that are absolute extorsionists.Does that come under any special heading? We tend to complain about a few baht's when purchasing simple things, but lots of people seem to take these companies prices in their stride & pay thousands over the odds. They use same Thai workforce, source materials same as you or me,but the end product is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ over the odds.Think about it.

I have spoken to a few people( farangs )& their idea was,we are only here to cash in.Makes you wonder.

Yuo are all off with the fairies if you think tourists don't get ripped off EVERYWHERE in the world. This is not just a Thai thing.

You're obviously the Doc of Patpong, you're the man! I now remember why I don't frequent Thaivisa. com as much as before, moderator huh!

The distribution of wealth in Thailand has become more and more inequitably over the last decades, Thailand is one of the very few countries where this happens.. Given this, better pocket all we can and do not think about the poor. We're living in Thailand and should adjust ourselves, isn't it...
