Popular Post HalcyonDays
Expats come in all different shapes and sizes. Here are a few examples. Proper Pats These are the real expats. They are high-flyers brought here by their companies to do a specific job. Their salaries are sky high. Their remuneration packages include accommodation and school fees. Their lifestyles are enviable. Mini Pats A Mini Pat is a poor man's version of a Proper Pat. A Mini Pat also works here in Thailand, but does not get the full package. Mini Pats are usually just middle managers or, in the case of O&G workers, supervisors or foremen. A Mini Pat's biggest desire in life is to be mistaken for a Proper Pat. Mini Pats talk about their salaries and post on forums. Proper Pats don't. Proper Pats have better things to do. Old Pats Old Pats are the retirees. They are the Old Boys. I quite like Old Pats. They obviously don't have too much cash, but they're usually quite decent. Old Pats like to talk about their lives. They like to reminisce. Old Pats often take care of themselves quite well. Because of their limited budget, few of them drink and smoke. Teacher Pats. Teacher Pats fall into two very separate categories. Young Teacher Pats are okay. They're just young kids bumming their way around the world. But older Teacher Pats are often whackos. I always avoid older Teacher Pats. Loony Pats Lots of Loony Pats end up in Pattaya. A while back there was a guy called Glitterman. He was as mad as a hatter. And about twenty years ago there was a guy called Astronaut Dave. Apparently he was extraordinary. Some people really believed he was an astronaut. Someone told me once that he really did work for NASA but had been fired due to his psychological quirks. Criminal Pats Some Criminal Pats are hard core and need to be avoided at all costs. Other Criminal Pats came here a long time ago and have reformed. Those that have reformed are usually anonymous and never talk about the past. It's up to you how you judge these people. Cracker Pats This is a joke category. Here in Thailand there are lots of Americans from the southern states. They come from places like Miami and Texas and Memphis. These men are Cracker Pats. ======= So, what did I miss? Edited February 21, 2014 by HalcyonDays
MAJIC
It's customary when starting a thread like this (tell all) to declare the catergory that you fall into? after all you wouldn't want members to think you are secretive, while expecting other members to tell all! now would you? zeichen
I am not Ex anything. I haven't stopped being patrioti to my country nor would I ever revoike my nationality. I live and workd abroad and have for 2/3rd of my life. The use of the word is relatively racist and discriminatory because we don't call Asians who move to our native countries expats we call them immingrants. Personally, I would probably be considered an immigrant and not an Expat. If you actually trace the history of the word, you will see that the first coined term for expats were Brits who turned their back on the empire and "went nativfe" in the ountries they were stationed, typically in Africa and India.

wym
Yes we romantic travelers are most indignant at being missed in the OP. If you could get the categories right - no more than six + "other - you could do a poll? Probably need to do a multiple choice, select more than one. Spoonman
according to the choice's given it would seem Iam a Proper Pat, missed out on the sky high salary and enviable lifestyle though. krisb
I don't see the issue with being a sex pat. In fact I hope to be one when I hit 70. Viagra will be finely tuned by then. Only 31 years to go, can't wait!

KittenKong
"What type of expat are you?"The worst type, of course. As for "old pats" being short of money, that depends. Personally I'm much better off now that I'm retired here as my income is about the same as before but my outgoings are much less (no tax, no work travel costs, no other work-related costs etc). And my capital situation is terrific having downsized from a large expensive European house to a nice Jomtien sea-view condo worth under 10% of what the house was, thus multiplying my investments/savings by a factor of two in the process. Popular Post Naam
So, what did I miss? you missed Tax Pats, not necessarily old and for sure not cash strapped retirees who finance the expenses of their very comfortable life style 100% (and more) with the taxes they don't have to pay to their home country taxman.
