At least two workers killed, several others injured in building collapse

BANGKOK: -- A four-storey building under construction in Samut Prakan collapsed Tuesday, killing at least two workers and injured several others.

The building was being built on the road along the Suvarnabhumi irrigation canal in Samut Prakan's Bang Pli district when the accident occurred at about 11:30 am.

So far, four workers have been rescued about nine others were believed to be buried under the pile of concrete slabs.

The building was being built to be the Ramathibodi Samut Prakan Hospital.

it would help if they actually used steel to support these concrete slabs until they were stabilized/secured but they use bamboo and bits of wood nailed together to support huge slads of concrete. I have seen several building with the timber supports buckled to buggery and the workers still working under and on them. Maybe if Thailand had building codes/safety standards that were adhered to this would stop but then it wouldnt be cheap and that is what is most important, they dont want good they want cheap. I am yet to find anything that has been done correctly, no spirit levels used, no licensed workers onsite, they use those pissy bricks and the cement is never mixed in the correct ratios so that it dries like hard sand and falls apart so easily,nothing professional at all and this is the result.

The accident took place at about 11.30am, police said, adding that the building was being constructed on the road lining the Suvarnabhumi irrigation canal. As of 3pm, nine people has been confirmed dead and 18 others injured.

Some workers had been rescued but many others are believed to be buried under the pile of concrete slabs. The building was part of the Ramathibodi Samut Prakan Hospital.

BANGKOK, February 25, 2014 (AFP) - At least 11 workers died and 18 others were injured when a large concrete beam collapsed Tuesday at a construction site just outside Bangkok, police said.

Two of the injured were in a critical condition in hospital, said Apiwat Kasorn of the Bang Phli police, a district in the province bordering Bangkok.

Most of the bodies had now been pulled from rubble at the construction site for a public hospital, although one of the dead workers was yet to be retrieved.

"Seven workers died at the scene and four died in hospital," Apiwat said, adding the victims were both Thais and migrant workers.

A team of volunteer rescuers put the death toll at 10 as of Tuesday afternoon, adding they were using a digger to remove debris in the search for more bodies.

Labour groups have warned about lax safety standards and low wages at Thai construction sites, especially for migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, who are often paid below the country's minimum daily wage of $9.2.

The nation has seen a building boom over recent years as the property market has soared.

As a construction worker myself I can tell u it's not a only a Thai thing . It happens allover the world including in western countries .

Miscalculations by engineers happen , greed by contractors , inexperienced constructionworkers , there are many reasons why accidents happen on constructionsites .

We as constructionworkers know the danger on the job .

I myself got lucky on several occasions , some colleages didn't .

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- At least 11 construction workers were killed Tuesday when a big cement beam fell on them in a Bangkok suburb, at the site where they were working, Thai police said.

About 27 workers were on their lunch break -- some of them eating, others just resting -- in the district of Bangpli when the beam fell on them, said police Lt. Col. Somchai Piakhan.

More than a dozen injured people have been transported to nearby hospitals, and at least one worker is still trapped inside the rubble, police said.

(Reuters) - A hospital under construction just east of Bangkok's main airport collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least 11 people and injuring 16, police said.

"The building collapsed, killing 11 construction workers," said Korawat Hanpradit, superintendent of Bang Phli police station in Samut Prakarn province.

Some of the injured were in critical condition, hospital sources said.

Emergency workers were checking for survivors who may still be trapped under the rubble at the construction site 20 km (12 miles) from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport.

Insufficient structural support systems and excessive structural design is most likely to blame. All hospitals usually require rather large reinforced structures as part of their design.

 

According to the photo above, the spacing’s between floor to ceiling appears to be extremely high 6-7meter in height and you can see that one of the columns at the base has snapped so perhaps excessive structural design could have played a leading part together with potentially compromised substituted materials and flimsy structural support systems.

 

Plenty of accidents like this waiting to happen in Thailand, based on observations, where there is a lack of enforcement with respect to building and safety standards. Sorry to hear good men and potentially women have paid the ultimate price unbeknown to them.

The press should be allowed to print the names of the engineers, contractors and suppliers' names as a public notice after all accidents. Need to hold these companies accountable for investing in safety.

In Hong Kong they still use bamboo scaffolding and still swear by it.  But there are safety standards there, and the standards are followed. 

 

Today a Thai guy at work and I were talking about how Thai's don't like to take ideas from foreigners and won't listen to advise much or instructions.  But it is true they do take foreign ideas and copy them and he mentioned the Japanese do that too.  But the difference it seems is that the Japanese try to understand the ideas and improve them or take them further.  At least implement them.  The Thais just copy what they see at surface level and do what they please, whether it makes sense or not.

 

This could be a case of that.  In Hong Kong, they use bamboo scaffolding only and are very scientific about it.  The scaffolding endures typhoons.  There are safety standards.  Why do the Thai only copy the physical part that they can see - let's use bamboo , its cheap!  Why can't they send people off to study about it a bit and implement some standards?  Why can't Thai's even be 10% as modern as they claim to be?

Accident? what Accident? Is it an "accident" when some drunk is driving at 160klicks in his old car? No this is a crime, or should we say a time when the crime of shoddy work and/or shoddy went bad enough all the safety factors were exceeded. This engineer would not call that an "accident"
