Sponsoring Grandma.

Featured Replies

After looking over the Thai Govt. websites, I have not been able to locate an answer to a question. I would appreciate a valid answer, that is, if one exists.

My mother (76) has decided that she wishes to live out her remaining years with us here in Chiangmai. She does not nor do we have the obligatory 800,000 baht guarantee to obtain a retirment visa. I know that it is allowed for a child to sponsor a non-Thai parent, A Thai parent to sponsor a non-Thai child. Is there an allowance for a Thai child to sponsor a non-Thai grandparent?

Cheers

No, a Thai cannot sponsor a grand parent.

But what kind of extension are you on yourself? She could qualify as your dependend, without the need to show money in the bank.

Thanks, I didn't think that there was much hope in this case. For myself, I'm on a Non-O 1 year, work permit, taxes etc. etc. for 27 years.

There is no provision for what you are asking about.

What type of extension are you on?

If you are on an extension based upon marriage to a Thai or having a Thai child she cannot get an extension based upon being your dependent. For most other types of extension you could.

The requirements for an extension based upon retirement is 800k baht in the bank or 65k baht income or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

If you are working and earn enough for an extension based on employement you cna change your reason of stay to employement. In that case your mother could be a dependent of you without the need to show money.

Do realise that moving your mother to Thailand might mean she will not be insured for medical costs. With failing health that can be very costly.

I can't imagine it being more expensive than her home country. At this point, it is better that she lives with us than by herself, expensive or not.

She could try to get a multiple entry non-o visa to visit you and her grandchildren. It would mean doing border runs every 90 days. Not the best option but possibly a way to start her stay until you can sort things out to get her an extension of stay. She could get the extension for any of the 90 day entries the visa gives during the its last 30 days.
