Best option for medium length stay

Featured Replies

Hello all, I thought I'd worked this out it seems I'm confused

I'm a UK resident coming to Thailand in a few weeks, I'm planning to stay six/twelve months, with a bit of travelling to other countries in the region.

Only interested in tourist visa, I don't meet criteria for other types and don't want other visa types at this stage.

What should I be asking for at the Thai embassy in London if i want maximum flexibility and minimum hassle

. Got the forms, got the photos.

Thanks for your help on what must seem like a stupid question.

A triple entry tourist visa will give you almost 270 days permission to stay with two border runs and three 30 day extensions if issued just prior to your departure and used correctly.

Having said that without further definition of your doing "a bit of travelling to other countries in the region" it's hard to say whter that would be the most cost effective visa. If you were travelling frequently to other countries you would have to purchase re-entry permits to keep you current permission to stay alive, 1000 baht for single, 3800 baht for multiple. If you are going to exit Thailand frequently, you might just want to get a single entry visa and rely on 30 day visa exempt entries when you reenter.. It really depends on your travel schedule which is not clearly defined in the OP.

Thanks Wayned

Other travel at this stage is Burma and Laos as ongoing to be in the north, if I budget well then a bit further, but the vast majority of time will be in Thailand if I like it, with a triple entry visa, how long is the first stay. Is it 60 days?

Each entry of a tourist visa gives 60 days that can be extended for 30 days at immigration.

Visa application info can be found here on embassy website: http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/4

You can get a visa also from one of the consulates. Contact info here: http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/179

Note that if you want to get a tourist visa from one of the consulates rather than the embassy you will need to apply in person. Consulates are no longer allowed to issue postal visas of any sort.

The first entry is 60 days. If you want to leave and re-enter during that 60 days and keep your permission to stay alive you must buy a re-entry permit, 1000 baht for single, 3800 baht for a double. You can extend the 60 days for 30 days during the last 30 daays of your permission to stay but if you want to leave and re-eneter during that 30 days you have to purchase a re-entry permit. Without a firm schedule any advice would be a guess and it could get very expensive real quick if you intend to make frequent trips out of Thailand.

Thanks for your responses, it was the 60 day 90 day that confused me, understand it now

One more question on this.

Will it be a problem if my return flight is for a date after the visa expires, or if i don't have an onward flight

Once you have the vis it will not be a problem. But you must supply whatever the Consulate requires to get the visa initially and the regs are different from one to another.
