Southern border academic urges stronger action on human trafficking

BANGKOK, 16 March 2014 (NNT) - An academic from the deep South has called on the government to take the problem of human trafficking more seriously following the arrest of over 200 illegal immigrants in Songkhla.

Academic from the Institute for Peace Studies, Prince of Songkla University, Saki Phithakkhumphon said the nationality of more than 200 illegal immigrants who claimed to be Turkish had not yet been identified due to a lack of cooperation for investigation. Mr Saki then urged the government to make more concrete efforts in combating human trafficking, saying that the illegal immigration of these 200 aliens was not unprecedented and speculated that they might use the same route as Rohingyas.

The government should not just dump the problem into the lap of low-ranking officers, said the academic.
