Pib
The reason why Thailand has so many ATMs is the same reason why Thailand has so many bars and so many ladyboys: Taking advantage of the foreigner and finding ways to separate him from his money. Thailand ATMs have the highest fees in the world for foreigners. It's a huge money maker for the bank - charging you extremely high fees to access your OWN money!Sorry. I cannot agree. Just open a Thai bank account and you will not have fees. Or, just continue your Thai bashing if that makes you happy.I agree with what you are saying Stoli, but you have to admit, the Thai bank system of charging 150 or is it 180? with a foreign ATM card is pure greed, and way out of order. Use a ATM at a casino in the USA the fee is $13, far more than anything in Thailand. I have had some ATM's that are private owned in the USA charge $5-6 fee. It's a choice you don't like the fee don't use the ATM. It's their ATM you are using. Wow...a $13 fee just to get more money to lose. But for gamblers willing to throw hundreds to thousands down on the casino tables an ATM fee is the least of their concerns....and I'm not sure it would even register as even a minor concern before or after a few drinks. Yup I was surprised about the fee, but was too lazy to go out on the strip and find another ATM. Hell everything was expensive in Vegas. Anyway to each their own. I'm not a gambler, only been there twice and only spent about $1000 on games, shows and meals. I'm sure way less than what some guys spend on girls and booze in Thailand. As for the few drinks, not really if I have 4 beers that's allot. Only play what you can afford to lose, same concept as in Thailand.

BudRight
Thai banks do charge 180 baht, which excepting Las Vegas apparently is still more expensive for a foreign card than almost anywhere. Not district but province and my post was not about different provinces, but about same province. Not sure if there is a limit on number of withdrawals, but i often get hit with 10 baht fee when use my Kbank card at SCB ATM For different province not only you pay fee to withdrawal but also pay fee to deposit. Ashto
Was able to open a deposit account with Visa based ATM card in Krungthai Bank. Requirements... 500 baht deposit, passport and Thai address. I have 30 days visa and 30 days on the apartment lease. Have heard there is a concern about bank's having long lists of dormant accounts... I guess to avoid foreign card charges some visitors open an account for a month or so and just leave. Perhaps that was why I was asked whether I was opening " just for a short while". I did the same thing late last year at KRUNGTHAI. Kasikorn had refused. A few days later a friend got Kasikorn to do it. Seems to depend on who you get at the bank on the day. All of this was in Bangkok. Nor do they need to if they are here for a short period of time! Been here 5 months and tried to open a account with Kbank and was told I needed to show a one year visa and a one year lease for my housing. Just try another bank. passport and address is all you need I live in Takhli ( Nakhon Sawan ) Retired , for several years now . I went with my wife to try to open an acount in my name. We visited 4 different banks in this city and they all said you need a work permit ... That rule came in October last year they said . The only bank who could help me was the SCB , They could open a joint acount with my wife . So that we did . I,m using it to transfer my pension . To avoid those fees the charge . 150 bht here and the same amount by visa in Norway 300bht per outtake here

Estrada
"Does Thailand Have The Most ATMs in the World? Answer: Yes, they are all over the Thailand. Many walking ATMs can be seen in Pattaya, Phuket, Changmai, Hua Hin, Soi Cowboy, Nana, Patpong and even the remotest villages in Thailand. Some of the ATMs frequently complain about having been skimmed on Thai Visa, before being shipped back to their country of origin to be refilled with cash.

sandyf
The foreign banks came first: HSBC was first about 125 years ago. Stan Chart (or should I say an early incarnation Chartered Bank) was second after that. First local commercial bank if I recall was Siam Commercial SCB. Bank of Thailand (BOT) some info on its website re history. Also has a museum and a library. http://www.bot.or.th/english/Pages/BOTDefault.aspx Cheers Fletch There was no HSBC 125 years ago, you probably mean Hong Kong & Shanghai. Just before Hong Kong was handed back to China the Hong Kong & Shanghai moved their HQ to London and was incorporated as HSBC Ltd. The original Hong Kong & Shanghai became the far east subsiduary of HSBC.

If you fall below there is a fee. Never thouht about it that way but yes you could get a nice return on a small amount. Standard Chartered (Thai) pcl is technically a Thai bank and is listed as such on BOT s website. It s legal form is a Thai subsidiary of UK parent. For me I clasify it as a sort of hybrid. Thainess
"Does Thailand have the biggest ATM network in the world?" The answer is obviously YES, if you're using "ATM" as an acronym for "Abominable Transsexual Male". On the other hand, if you meant "Automatic Teller Machine", I can automatically tell you that, of course, the United States probably has at least twice and probably three times as many ATMs as Thailand. While it's true that the major Thai cities (and there are only 4: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Patong/Phuket City) have a huge number of ATMs, they are quite rare in small cities and very rare indeed in villages in Thailand, whereas in most Western countries even small villages will have at least one ATM. On the "other" other hand, Thailand also has the world's biggest ATM network if by ATM you mean a foreigner who's easily separated from his money! I agree with most of what you say, but it's not rare for small cities in Thailand to have ATMS, most have multiple ATMs and even in remote villages there will be an ATM, typically setup at the police station. I live and work in Isaan. Our company contracts with farmers to grow for us so I travel to allot of remote villages and meet with farmers. I have never had an issue to find an ATM, might have to drive 5 km or so, but they are not rare.

Yes, really sorry for you if the appearance of ATMs separates you from your money. And what are the "extremely high fees" to which you refer--the B150/160 surcharge? That fee goes to your bank, not the Thai bank. My bank reimburses me the fee.
