March 20, 201412 yr I was thinking of getting away from the city for Songkran and was toying with the idea of heading to Krabi. I have seen coaches to Krabi for relatively cheap. Just wondered who had been and where they could recommend staying while there? Also my first time here while Songkran is happening. What is open and what is closed? March 22, 201412 yr I'm also keen to avoid Songkran, having tolerated it in Chiang Mai for business reasons for the past 8 years. I've heard that Bangkok is one of the best places to be as, apart from KSR, there is very little water throwing as most of the population has left to go up North. Are any of you Bangkok old hands able to confirm this? I was then planning on going over the Cambodia for a few days as I dont think Songkran is as full on there. Again, anyone know?
March 22, 201412 yr Songkhran can be a great time to be in BKK. The place has a very eerie feel once everyone has left...The only places it can be 'full on' like CM or Pattaya is Khao San, some stretches of Sukhumwit, Silom but on the whole it's very low key in comparison. Hopefully this coming rain will dampen things down, and clear the smog, if you excuse the pun....if it ever actually falls that is....

Cambodia's water festival is in November. However, the Songkran period is the time of the Khmer New Year. Lasts three days but the effects last longer. Banks are closed for many days, from a Saturday through Wednesday, I believe. Many people go home. Some businesses and some bars even shut down for a couple of days. The city is comparatively empty. Which can be nice.

The rain fell this morning in BKK but I was I was inside so didn't see it. It caused a few power cuts though! Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

I'd say there's still a lot of water throwing going on- I've never been KSR during Songkran but pretty much where there's people there's water throwing going on... you still can't wonder to 7-11 without someone trying to drench you (least round where I live down Sathorn way). Silom is particularly is jammed packed and insane. Think I maybe will leave town for a few days... what's Hua Hin like over Songkran? I don't want to come across as a bitter killjoy, but I'm a bitter killjoy and there's no point fighting it. edited for spelling Edited March 22, 201412 yr by Rumblecat
