banagan
I got my laptop and credit card stolen this morning. I only realized the card was gone this evening, so the bank is shut. Its a mastercard debit card... I'm not sure if she can use it without the pin? Or if she can just buy shit online. My bank is Thanachart bank, and their site's not working... so I can't even get an emergency phone number to call. I had a card stolen in Ireland years back and the credit card company covered it... I just hope if this toe rag has fleeced me Thai banks are the same. Are banks open on Sunday?
Mrjlh
Make a police report and then try a branch at one of the major malls which should be open. Give it a try. They should also have a toll free number listed.

banagan
I contacted mastercard and they said they'd fax the bank they also said that any any money stolen is usually covered by the bank. I never made a police report... I was in a bike accident a while back here, and sitting around the police station for 3 days was more painful. But, maybe I should, in case the card's been used, then the bank may need it. Thanks for the help Edited March 22, 2014 by banagan
NancyL
I hope the OP acts quickly. I've heard several horror stories that lead me to believe the Thai banks don't "cover" losses due to theft of their credit cards the way the western banks do. Thus the advice not to have too much money in an account that can be accessed via a debit card or ATM card.
negreanu
Its a debit card. They are not covered that well compared to the actual credit card variety. Your best hope is to get a time and dated police report ASAP. You may then stand a chance for transactions after that time and date. Before that best of luck. CharlieH
If its a Thai bank, and its been used, you dont stand much chance, sorry for your predicament.
seajae
mate, its not good, banks here will not replace any money taken but you have no one to blame but yourself, letting your little head tell you what to do is not the best way to go in Thailand. Many years ago a mate arrived here for a holiday, got pissed and picked up a hooker. Woke up the next morning and had nothing, all his bags gone, wallet gone, passport gone, he was left with absolutely zilch, trouble is he still thinks with his little head. Some people never learn.......
Popular Post krisb
Yep debit cards can be used without pin if they have the pay pass chip. Having your account online is good. Least then you can transfer the funds. Having strangers in your house is silly but you probably know that already.
thailandbeachisland
Of course they can us it without pin offline as well as online.
peterb17
Hope you have no problems- change banks - a friend was pickpocketed last year- KBank has 24 hour service centre and specific number for English- card was cancelled within minutes. Much better to book into an hotel - sound advice from another member- not a good idea to have strangers in your own place. Well of I may be wrong, but have a suspicion the OP had not been preparing a fabulous candle lit dinner for his friend. Have never been in a short time hotel, would the Hilton, Sheraton etc not let you book in for the evening- a suite, Champagne, room service etc can be quite romantic? Middle of last year Amex contacted me notifying me of 35 suspicious transactions which had occurred over night. My card had been skimmed and I was reimbursed in 24 hrs. banagan
Quite surprised by some of the nasty comments... was it a dumb move? ye, only human, had a few beers on me and met a cute Thai Chic... it happens. The banks website was broken, so I wasn't able to check my account or even find a phone number in time... I eventually rang mastercard in the States who said they'd fax the bank... so, the speed at which things happen here, it was too late. Found out today that she emptied my account... how exactly can she withdraw cash without a pin number, isn't that the whole point of an atm/chip and pin card? Made a police report today, 4 hours it took and still not finished! Will talk to the bank tomorrow, I hope you guys are wrong and the money that was stolen is reembursed... if that's not the case then you're moenys just not safe in Thai Banks... I'm sure cards get stolen here all the time. Anyway, lesson learned.

seajae
you cant take out money from a teller machine without a pin number so something is not right here. There is no way to withdraw cash at all, she woudnt even be able to get a balance to find out how much there was. To use it online you need the secure password on chipped cards, a signature is the only other option but a farang name and a thai signing would make it hard as well. You will have to wait for the place where it was withdrawn and how it was done to get any answers, the bank should be abl;e to do it pretty quick. Doesnt make sense at all unless you had the code written down with the card.

NancyL
She could have used it to make purchases. Clerks in the stores here often aren't very attentive about matching signatures on receipts with names/signatures on the card.
