BANGKOK: -- Suthep vows to oppose election if it is held before national reform

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Jatuporn Promphan yesterday announced a mass rally of red shirts on April 5 but did not specify the venue.

The red shirts yesterday held a mass rally in South Pattaya, Chon Buri, where they organised a rite to mourn the Constitutional Court ruling on Friday annulling the February 2 election.

Jatuporn called on the red shirts to wear black from tomorrow to Sunday to mourn the behaviour of independent agencies.

People's Democratic Reform Committee chief Suthep Thaugsuban on Friday night said the PDRC would oppose the upcoming election unless it followed national reform.

Suthep said he would soon mobilise anti-government protesters for another mass rally in Bangkok.

"There will be heavier opposition as we call for immediate national reform," he said.

"An election only comes after that. So don't try. It will be a waste of energy and budget as the people are not ready to go voting. They want reform."

Meanwhile, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva called on caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Suthep to come together in televised talks to try and find a solution to the political problems.

Speaking at a PDRC event at Lumpini Park in Bangkok yesterday to raise funds for rice farmers, Abhisit said the Democrat Party, which boycotted the February 2 election, would run in the next election if it was organised fairly and "acceptable to all sides".

"Unless the PM agrees to hold talks, the country cannot move on," he said, without revealing if he had discussed the matter with Suthep.

The date for a new general election is yet to be set, with the Election Commission to discuss the matter with the government and the other political parties.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit called on the Election Commissioners to resign and pay the Bt3.8 billion cost incurred in staging the February 2 poll.

His deputy, Anusorn Iamsa-ard, reiterated that there had been a conspiracy by the PDRC and some political parties, independent agencies as well as the military and unidentified forces to topple the government.

Democrat spokesman Ongart Klampaiboon labelled the allegation "groundless" and condemned Pheu Thai for making it.

Suthep said Election Commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn had asked him not to obstruct the February 2 election and had made the same request again.

However, Suthep said the PDRC would not accept the talk coming from politicians.

Like Somchai, he said the EC should not have to pay for the failed election. It was the government's responsibility.

Suthep and PDRC leader Thaworn Senneam yesterday spoke to PDRC guards about democracy.

Thaworn said the PDRC would keep a close eye on the impeachment case against caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating her but has yet to decide whether to indict her for alleged negligence in the rice-pledging scheme.

Thaworn said that while holding a new election before national reform was against the stance of the PDRC, it was unclear whether the organisation's supporters continued to support the same stance.

"Trying to have an election using the same rules will only bring doom to the country," he said.

"The PDRC leaders will evaluate many factors. Whether we will close the roads [for rallying]. He said it would be up to the PDRC's leaders to decide whether to ask government officials to join the protest.

What a mess this is turning out to be , it all revolves around catch 22, you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't, you really don't want an election that returns the PTP and C.T. P.M. Yingluck into a much stronger position , where everyone will be told to go take a jump and you really want to see reforms happen , question is when, regardless of who wins an election , the other side will be out protesting, catch 22. coffee1.gif

"Suthep and PDRC leader Thaworn Senneam yesterday spoke to PDRC guards about democracy"

Anti-Democrats espousing Democracy. How ridiculous is that.

Week after week, the media produce stories that promote Suthep Thaugsuban and his anti-democrats. The propaganda is simply tiresome.

On the thug-guards referenced in this article, that the anti-democrat leadership is apparently arming and trying to indoctrinate..

Thaworn Senniam, a core member of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and not that long ago a deputy leader of the Democrat Party, is in charge of the guards. It seems his job is to make armed thugs appear as something else.

The coup-mongers talk about the guards being maligned. Maligned? Heck, hasn't one just been arrested for blazing away with an automatic war weapon they reason?

I understand that at one time there were some 4,000 guards and this is now down to 2,234 after a number of them either quit or were screened out."

These guards are paid a daily allowance of 500 baht for their services. That's more than a 1.1 million baht a day now and 2 million a day previously. With the protests having been going for about four months, it can be estimated that some US$7 million might have been paid out for brown shirts alone.

"Trying to have an election using the same rules will only bring doom to the country," he said. and
"Trying to have an election using the same rules will only bring doom to the country," he said.

Firstly - who called the election and now they want to distance themselves. NO HOPE for this country under such idiocy!

Secondly - Truer words have never been spoken. This is why the pace is in a total MESS. Thee needs to be refdorm so this crappy situation affecting MILLIONS not just a few Bankokians, does not occur again.

It is more than the rice farmers being affected. Every little noodle shop owner is seeing less money as there are less people with confidence and prices are rising and tourists are giving Thailand the FLICK

Does not have to be all reforms in place before an election.

All that is needed are electoral reforms to keep crooks out of government and make an election as fair as possible.

Then hold an election followed by all the other reforms as decided on by an independent body and taken to a referendum with the result binding on the Govt.

The operative quote here is to "make an election as fair as possible"....It would be interesting to see the plans the PAD-Dem's have for this. What is obviously an attempt to diddle the system to improve their electability, without changing themselves.

And again, the anti-democratic blather about "reforms as decided on by an independent body..."...Not by an elected, nationally representative body such as Parliament, but by "a few"...Presumably a BKK. based group, who they will attempt to stack with unelectable Amart operatives usurping the role of a national electorate.

Using the smoke of a 'national referendum', presenting the electorate with the "cooked books" is diversionary. The country just spent billions on a 'national referendum called an election", which they want to nullify.

If they have all these holier-than-thou proposals for reform, sell them via an election.

As an aside, I am glad TV has a policy of preventing 'double nicks".

The conspirators care for no-one and no-thing other than their own selfish interests.

They are more than willing to let the country go down the drain to try and get their way.

In fact, these losers are of a mindset that the more damage they do to the country, the better than chances are of winning so they are actively trying to cause and inflict as much harm as their small following can on the real great masses of the people.

After reading your posts over the last few weeks or so, it would appear that you appear to glean information from certain posts then cast your opinion. Whilst doing this, you appear to be very well informed.

The only reason Jatuporn is leading the red shirt rally is for himself. He loves the attention.

Poor boy probably was whipped and spanked as a child. Now, as an adult, he has a chance to get in front of big, ignorant crowds and act like an evangelist skin head.

I detest individuals who use others for personal gain and ego boosting like Jatuporn. He doesn't give a shit about Thailand, about poor people or about anyone but himself. He needs attention and he is using people and this political storm as his pulpit..... PATHETIC.

Ooooh. A surprise .Well, a surprise to everyone except the police and the army since they always know before hand when there's a protest.

All of the political groups out protesting have police & army informants. Holding a secret in Thailand is much like a bar girl maintaining her virginity.

PAD is long gone. Dems have said will stand in fair elections. Seems simple enough to me

Bit of a mystery why you hyphoned the two as they are not linked politically. Unless of course you are trying create smoke where there is no fire.

Easy really follow the red pick-ups down highway 2 to their destination, no police road blocks, no tea money collected. 12 to a pick-up, grannies/kids/ bamboos/old Dunlops, alcohol on board, fags, all good fun.bah.gif

If they were to protest as they should to ask where the money has disappeared to I can understand then. After all if you have the country at heart you want this question answered, NOT support the loss.

Get real once and for all Bob, the government has toppled it's self.

Had they carried out their duties as per promise no protests would have been made. AGAIN Bob follow the money. Plain enough to see where the basic problem lies----disgusting-disgraceful bad governance.

As usual it will be the Dems fault. QuietBob would be a better name for you.

I wouldn't even use the energy to read his posts let alone reply to them, I have him on ignore along with fryslan boppe, fab4 and life on here is much more sensible.

Using the ignore feature really does enhance your TV News experience by a hell of a lot.

Thanks for the advice - I too am sick of the crap and lies they write and have given up even looking at their posts. At first I thought they were making posting a joke to get a reaction, but soon realised they actually believe what they write. I will use the ignore feature on these 2 clowns as you suggest,

Exactly what I have been saying since the first snap election was called and Yingluck refused no negotiate and she sure as hell wouldn't agree to reforms before elections then.

Here is what I posted for discussion on PDRC and Dems facebook pages (where I am very active and actually get respect from the Thais) for discussion.

If Yingluck and the PTP refuse to accept reforms before elections, maybe they would agree to 'electoral reforms' to make them free and fair..... It would only take no more than 2 weeks... Then new elections can go ahead with the Dems...

Following suggested reforms.

1.... Evidence of attempted vote buying will result in disqualification of that party's candidate with a life ban from all government positions/employment and also given a 5 year prison sentence (mandatory). 10 breeches of this rule by the guilt party, then party withdrawn from election and banned for life.

2... All pre-election policies to be scrutinized by a specialist panel from the EC (election commission). To look for policies like the rice scheme, that are only aimed at getting voters in a specific sector of the electorate. Instead all policies MUST be for the benefit of the entire nation not just farmers from the north.

3... Village elders and leaders found guilty of pressuring the village's voters which way to vote to be punished with a 5 year prison sentence and a life ban from holding their position again. Also the party they are urging to vote for to have the same punishment as for vote buying.

4... Any party that is suspected to have any involvement with Thaksin or any member of the Shinawatra family wives or relatives to be immediately dissolved and all its members banned from politics for life.

5... Any person who have had any past criminal convictions or who are currently under investigation by the NACC are banned from registering as a candidate.

This will take no more than 1 to 2 weeks, and then elections can be held.... The Dems will win by a mile, then they can oversee the rest of the national reforms to eradicate corruption completely.

So will Yingluck and the PTP actually agree to a quick electoral reform and quicker and most importantly 'unaffected' elections as a compromise????

If they say yes, they would probably defuse the tension immediately and it will go a long way to declare that they have confidence to contest a really free and fair election. Of course none of the PTP or Yingluck will agree with point 4. But as long as the EC comes out with this and backed by and signed off by the courts... The there is little they can do.

Some of the Dems won't like this point 4 either, but I am sure they will be willing to accept it because they believe in true democracy.

But either way... They won't be able to refuse it as long as they have agreed to allow the EC to make the reforms.

4... Any party that is suspected to have any involvement with Thaksin or any member of the Shinawatra family wives or relatives to be immediately dissolved and all its members banned from politics for life.

You can be sure that #4 is a deal killer as it is a bridge too far and nearly impossible to prove. You may implement the rules in two weeks but the courts will be busy for years trying to prove any violations. I like your intentions, though.

Can't agree more with you !! these moronic Red Shirts are killing this country and it's people and feel nothing for it or them as long as they can steal every baht they can for their camel jockey in Dubai and his sister and for them self's !!! Only way they can win is to buy their votes and make promises they can't keep to the poor but feel great to steal their money !! Need REFORMS in place before any elections can take place so these thieving Red Shirts can't continue on their path of destruction of this country !! (and I hope they don't kill anymore children that may be at any rally's) The Government should be working for the people NOT taking everything away from the people and the country.

#4 is just a touch un-democratic.
