Latest craze in the village

Recommended Posts

Last year I mentioned that a 'fashion accessory' amongst the locals was a transparent red headlamp cover which made bikes appear to be going away from you when in fact they were approaching!

I have noticed another craze catching on just lately backed up with a chat I had with a local mechanic. Seems it is the height of cool on semi-automatic scooters to disengage the clutch by stamping on the gear lever and revving through to valve bounce!

The local mechanic told me he has had three topend rebuilds just this last week due to this practise!

I've seen one kid doing this awhile back, but he wasn't redlining it and brought the engine to a higher rpm for a race launch. Light pressure on the gear lever for the clutch to engage and a controlled release just like a normal manual cable release. He launched really well. Go to a race track and watch the guys on the auto-scooters, as they will embarrass the bigger bikes off of the line (yes I know that they are lighter) and yes the street isn't the race track. I'm just talking about the application :)

^ Yeah they also do it to get the front wheel in the air. Disengage the clutch, bring the revs up and then release. I must admit to having done this a few times play riding on the trails on my KSR. No need to bounce it off the rev limiter though.

Of course I do not redline our wave 125i but I always use this clutch technique

to match revs when downshifting

Much smoother of course than just jabbing a lower gear clutch-less.

Think you need a real bike.................coffee1.gif

umm yeah we have a few...

How does that change the fact that a downshift

on any motorized vehicle can be made smoother by matching rpm

to some degree?

Yes I used to do the same thing 40 years ago when I snuck my mums Honda stepthru out for an illicit ride.

What these guys are doing though is riding along, maybe 50 or 60 kph, declutching and then revving the tits off it for 10 seconds whilst coasting along.

Good way to impress the telegraph posts I suppose.

  • 5 months later...

My Honda CB400 is red lined at 12,500 rpm.

Sometimes I play with these sort of children when they are revving the guts out by coming alongside the, tooting the horn, smiling and then drop down to second and wave goodbye.

I don't do it that often but it do bring a smile to an old mans face.
