Need help with Thai passport renewal in Thailand.

Featured Replies

Hi all !

This my first post to this forum. I need help and suggestion about a problem we have in family with my wife sons Thai passport renewal. We live in Stockholm and today my wife called the Thai embassy and asked for an appointment to renew her sons Thai passport. He is 19 years old and has also Swedish passport. His Thai passport expired last year.

They told her she could not have an appointment until mid June and then it would take several weeks to receive the new passport.

We have planned to go to Thailand in the middle of June and my wife son is going to stay for a year or more and the rest of us is going back to Sweden after 6 weeks.

The man at the embassy told me he could use his Swedish passport for traveling to Thailand and then apply for an extension of stay for one year at immigration in Thailand. Cost 1900 bath. He said it is a service for Thai people who has double citizenship. If he do this I do not think he can work in Thailand even if he is Thai citizen. Or am I wrong ?

The man at the embassy told her that he also have a second option. That is to travel to Thailand with his Swedish passport. Apply for a renewal of his Thai passport in Bangkok. After receiving the new passport. Travel to Laos and cross the border with the Swedish passport and then enter Thailand back with the new Thai passport. Then he can stay as long as he wants because he enter Thailand as Thai.

I need your help here. Is this last option really going to work ? Is it better and safer to go with the firs option and extend his stay with the Swedish passport. Then he cant work which is the whole point with his long stay in Thailand. He has work waiting for him.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestion in this.

He can and should enter Thailand on his expired Thai passport and then appply for a new passport. If he enters on his Swedish passport, he must leave on his Swedish passport and re-enter on his new Thai passport and most likely he cpould only do that by air not by land.

Correct. An expired passport is valid for entry into the country that issued the passport. In Thailand, he will get a new Thai passport within days.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

Just another example of a Thai embassy giving out incorrect info.

Passport required.

- Nationals of Thailand are allowed to enter with expired

passports.

If renewing in Thailand he'll need to be on a house registration.

How old is it when he'll be put in the draft lottery?

That is a good point.

The option of entering and leaving on the Swedish passport is a good option. If he also has a Thai ID-card to show he is a Thai national, he will have no problems and doesn't need a work eprmit or anythin as he is a Thai citizen and can proof that. He only has to comply with immigraiton law and get his extension, but doesn't have to comply with labour laws for foreigners.

With his Thai passport it will also be possible, but a bit more problamatic once his passport expires. Than he doesn't have valid proof of Thai naitonality and will have a problem proofing that. But still will be legally working wthout a WP.

I had a similar issue several years ago with my Thai/American son. While we were in the US his Thai passport expired. When I called the Thai Embassy in New York they said not to worry. He will be allowed to enter Thailand on his expired Thai passport. He had no problems at BKK immigration entering Thailand on the expired passport and was advised to renew it. Cheers,,,

Indeed it is no problem, but renewal in Thailand requires beeing on a house hold registration book and he is of an age to be drafted into the militairy. (But exempt for the draft when studying).

Hi all !

Thank you for your suggestions and replies.

I think we go with his Swedish passport and then he applies for an extension for one year. During this time he is going to work. He is 19 and is registered in a house book. Is this going to be a problem with the military in Thailand you think ? I do not want him ending up with a military duty instead of his work. He is ending high school in June and wants to take one year of from school working in Thailand and then go back to Sweden for studying further after about a year. This is our ground plan anyway. But I am worried he must do his military duty. Is it any way to stall it ?

They do not do the draw for the draft until the age of 21. It seems he will be back Sweden by then.

"He has work waiting for him."

OP, if you don't mind, what kind of work will he be doing?
