BANGKOK: -- Police raided a clinic in Buri Ram's Muang district yesterday following complaints that the place sold unlicensed diet pills with Sibutramine as a key ingredient. Sibutramine, which is banned in Thailand, is known to cause neurosis and people with heart disease and vascular problems can suffer fatal side effects.

The provincial health office has ordered the clinic to be closed for 30 days pending investigation.

Some plaintiffs alleged that they suffered severe side-effects from the pills and some have even had to seek psychiatric treatment, Pol Lt-Colonel Kumpol Wongsa-nguan of the Muang Buri Ram police station.

Police seized the unlabelled diet pills and doses of glutathione injections worth Bt500,000 totally, and have also arrested the clinic clerk Wanphen Adulsuk, 49. Police are now looking for the clinic's owner.

Buri Ram police chief Pol Major Chaidet Panraksa and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials confirmed at a press conference yesterday that the pills were indeed laced with Sibutramine. Upon inspecting receipts and packaging, police discovered that the pills had been sent from Samut Prakan's Phra Pradaeng district and Chon Buri's Muang district.
