Going to TH for the first time, beauty-related questions

Featured Replies

Hi, I should be going to Thailand next month for a couple of days and I got a couple questions:

Does anyone have any hair-salon experience? I am thinking of going to Zenred, has anyone heard anything about them?
I should be staying near Pattankarn Road, and I was thinking of going to MBK mall by taxi, is it true that taxi is cheap in Thailand? Is MBK mall quite good and affordable? I would like to try out some makeup/skincare products from Asia. I don't think it's super far from Pattankarn road anyway
Any tips before I go to Thailand for the first time?

And last but not least, should I take pounds with me or thai baht? If the latter, should I exchange it in the UK or in the Thailand?

Thanks so so so much!

You will need Thai baht and only Thai baht.

Yes, taxis are comparatively cheap. There is also a good mass transit system reaching places like MBK (BTS and MRT) and this is usually quicker as it avoids the traffic.

MBK is huge and contains a whole gamut of prices. It is not, however, at all near Pattanakarn Road. In fact Pattanakan Rod is a bit out of town. If traveling from there to MBK (or anywhere else in downtown BKK) you would do best to get a taxi to the nearest BTS/MRT station and then mass transit from there, a taxi ride all the way from Pattanakan to downtown will take very long.

Other than products made in Thailand, makeup and skin care products here are no less expensive than elsewhere. And the Thai made brands are not of best quality as a rule. Most Thais, if they can afford it, use imported brands. Among Asian made products, Shiseido is popular -- but as mentioned no cheaper here than back home.

Reviews on Zenred have been mixed. If you do a search here in this forum you'll find a variety of hair salons discussed. It also depends on what exactly you will have done. And your hair type. It is not so easy to find hairdressers really skilled at managing western hair especially if you want coloring. If you have dark and fairly coarse hair, similiar to Asian, then easier.

zenred seems to pop up on chat forums from time-to-time - don't want to speculate why that might be, suffice to say it's not regarded here as being any better / worse than all the other hair salons

seems like a bit of a waste of time to spend part of a 2 day trip thailand at a hair salon but if you really want (i suppose you might need a blow dry before going out) any hair salon you see in a major mall will be basically same

you are best off bringing pounds and change a few at the airport (for taxi and hotel etc), and then the rest at a bank in town later

you will get a better rate doing this, than buying bahts in the UK.... 10% better i would say

rate at kasikorn bank today (a high street bank) is 53.18 baht to the pound

Take pounds and change them in Thailand - never in UK where you will get a lousy rate and oft rip-off commission charges.

Changing money at the airport is the worst thing to do the airport rates are around 10-15% lower than outside banks/exchanges so get a few baht from the UK before you come and change your money in town.

Haircuts, hairdos and many beauty related procedures can be wuite cheap in the provinces outside of Bangkok. I do not know the Bangkok scene. My Thai wife gets her hair cut regularly for 200 THB. Although Thai women have nice hair, I have not seen hairdos that particularly impress me. The makeup can transform the women from plain to beautiful just as in many other countries. A lot of Thai women have a natural beauty that is impressive.
