Powerful quake hits Chile, tsunami warning: officials

WASHINGTON - A powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit off Chile's Pacific coast on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador, US officials said.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), 83 kilometers from Iquique on Chile’s coast, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning.

Magnitude 8.0 earthquake strikes off coast of Chile, triggering destructive tsunami

BANGKOK: -- An earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile, triggering a 2-meter high tsunami.

According to initial reports, the quake was only 6.2 miles below the seabed and struck at around 6:46 pm local time.

The first tsunami wave hit the Chilean coast within 15 minutes of the quake, says Chilean navy.

The earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for all of South and Central America's Pacific coast.

The massive earthquake has also caused landslides which are partially blocking roads and highways.

In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that caused huge damage in several coastal cities in central and southern Chile. The quake also killed hundreds of people.

Philippines monitoring tsunami possibility after Chile quake
Frances Mangosing

MANILA: -- The Philippines is monitoring sea level changes associated with the 8.2-magnitude earthquake in Northern Chile on Wednesday morning.

“No evacuation order is in effect. The public is advised to wait and listen for updates,” the Philippines Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

A strong tremor hit near the coast of Northern Chile at 7:47 a.m. (Philippine time) with a magnitude of 8.2 and a depth of 10 kilometres.

“An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours,” Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs issued tsunami warnings in the Philippines for a few times in the past after an earthquake in Chile. It is located on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

A tsunami warning is in effect in Chile, Peru and Ecuador, while a tsunami watch is in place in Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Tsunami waves were monitored in tide gauges in Peru and Chile with a maximum wave height of 2.1 metres in Pisagua, Chile, Phivolcs said.

Minor tsunami hits Japan after Chile quake

TOKYO - Small tsunami waves hit northern Japan early Thursday following a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake thousands of kilometers away across the Pacific Ocean in Chile after officials issued an evacuation advisory for certain areas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said waves of 40 centimetres (16 inches) were monitored in Kuji, Iwate prefecture, at 7:39 am (2239 GMT Wednesday) about an hour after the first 20-centimetre tsunami was recorded there.

Waves of up to 30 centimetres were also monitored in other areas of northern Japan, the agency said, adding that bigger waves could hit the coast later.

Earlier Thursday, Japan issued a tsunami advisory, saying waves of up to one metre (three feet) above normal sea levels could hit eastern Pacific coast regions, but were unlikely to cause damage.

Large areas of the coastline covered by the advisory were damaged by the 2011 quake and tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people and triggered a nuclear accident in Fukushima.

The agency advised people to leave the coast but said it did not expect damage from the waves.

"Get out of the water and leave the coast immediately," it said.

Local authorities issued evacuation advisories to more than 22,000 people living near the coastline in Iwate prefecture, public broadcaster NHK said.

Television footage showed people fleeing to nearby shelter in Kesennuma, Miyagi prefecture, where more than 1,000 people were killed in the 2011 tsunami.

Before dawn a tsunami warning siren echoed over Ishinomaki, another city hit hard by the tsunami three years ago, and some local bus services were cancelled.

Powerful 7.8 earthquake rocks northern Chile: officials

SANTIAGO - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 rocked northern Chile late Wednesday, the day after a deadly 8.2 jolt in the same region, authorities said.

A tsunami warning was issued and thousands of people were ordered to evacuate inland from coastal areas, according to authorities who had first measured the quake at 7.4.

The new temblor struck at 2343 local (0143 GMT), 20 km (14 miles) south of the city of Iquique, the navy’s alert service said.

"Based on its strength a tsunami warning has been issued," the nationaloceanographic agency, known as CHOA, added.

Thousands of Chileans had just returned home after spending the night on hills following Tuesday’s 8.2-magnitude earthquake that killed six people and sparked tsunami fears as far as Japan.

The tremors were felt as far inland as landlocked Bolivia and sparked evacuation warnings up the Pacific coast of South America and into Central America.
