FIFA World Cup Group G games in Phuket? (USA, Germany, Ghana and Portugal)

Howdy ... guess you know my team from that greeting!

Posting this in Phuket forum, as I'm trying to plan ahead to find somewhere/someone here who plans to air any/all of the Group G games, either in a bar or home with cable. I will happily give my drink business if not banter to you.

Sure, I'm sporting red, white and blue, but will enjoy watching all group games I can with fans from Germany or Ghana/Portugal for that matter - that's what makes the World Cup so great.

For reference, here's the schedule for Group G in local times:

•late Monday, June 16, 11pm - Germany v Portugal

•early Tuesday, June 17, 5am - USA v Ghana

* Note, there will be only one match in between the above two games... 2am Iran v Nigeria, might be worthy of staying up for in between....got to work on Mon and Tuesday, but once every 4 years, right?

•early Sunday, June 22, 2am - Germany vs Ghana

•early Monday, June 23 5am - USA v Portugal

•late Thursday, June 26, 11pm - USA v Germany / Portugal v Ghana (both played at the same time, but of course US v Germany is the one I'm devoted to)

Any other games, I'll try to watch when I can, preferably the 11pm games onThursday/Fridays/Saturdays....

The world cup isn't being aired by any of the normal suppliers so not sure how many bars will have it.

My understanding is that in order to watch you need to buy a set top box for RS satellite.

If it's on TT (terrestrial TV) you can come over my place, otherwise let me know and we can find a place to watch together...I am sure there is another thread carrying related issues about English-language soundtrack and other coverage issues, ad nauseum...

I think any of the football orientated bars will do there utmost to broadcast matches, particularly if they are nationally aligned.

As an example, I noticed today whilst cycling past, that a bar in Rawai, (Asia Bar) had a large sign outside advertising 'Bundeslige' (German league) football, live. That tells me that there's a more than probable chance that the same bar will be showing the matches involving Germany (plus USA etc) come June.

I'm sure that in the coming weeks there will be many adverts for the World Cup. Choose your venue with care, and always enjoy the game.

I don't think it is

Football fans in Thailand will have to pay to watch the 2014 World Cup now - at least part of it - after it was announced that only 22 out of the 64 games will be broadcast for free.

RS Sports, who own the exclusive rights to air the games, had planned to charge THB1,590 (USD49.35) for a brand new set-top box to watch all 64 matches.

Thanks everyone. Might try Stone crab...though also willing to pitch in if someone in Town just wants to buy a box to watch em' all (if it's really only 1,XXX baht) Keep me posted. Should be an exciting group, indeed.

It's always surprised me why one of the beer companies don't put on some "fan festivals" for the big matches. You would get some expats and tourists from the two competing countries, for sure, especially with this set top box fiasco.

You buy a ticket, and inside is a big screen, tables and chairs, and of course, only their beer for sale inside. I'm sure it would be profitable, and a good advertisement for their product.

Given the kick off times of the matches, Jungceylon could have been perfect. No need for fencing, just need security on the walkways into the centre, as the shopping centre is closed and would act as an existing man made barrier.

Toilets, three phase electric, lighting, PA system, cover from the rain (mostly) is already there. They only needed to supply the TV or projection screen.

I'm sure other venues in the tourist areas could be used to host such an event.

Most of the capital cities of the competing teams run similar "fan festivals" and they are successful.

Don't know why something isn't hosted here.

alot of the bars wont have the world cup as you have to pay for a 30,000baht licence for the rights to show it.

If that's the case, given the times of a lot of the matches will be on, in Thailand, and the fact the Thai Army is firmly in control here now, I can only think there are going to be a lot of Phuketians watching the World Cup on fuzzy internet streams.

I wish they would do that on the English commentary too!
