Changing Visa on Arrival to tourist visa possible?

Featured Replies

Just a quick question. Thanks in advance for the answer. If I arrive to Bangkok on a Visa on Arrival (which allows me 15 days in Thailand) can I change that to a tourist visa at some point at Bangkok immigration? I want to avoid having to apply for a tourist visa at the local embassy as there's only a small chance I would need to stay somewhere in the 30-60 day range.

Simple answer is no .

Apply for a visa if you believe there is a "chance " that a longer stay is required.

If you enter on a visa exempt entry or a VOA it can not be changed to a tourist visa, you can only get a 7 day extension and the cost is 1900 baht. You will have to travel to a neighboring country and apply at a consulate/embassy there. It seems that Laos is the easiest for either a single or double entry visa. You will have to spend at least one night there as applications are acccepted in the morning of day 1 and passsports/visas avaiable for pickup in the afternoon of day 2. It takes longer in Cambodia, up to 4 days, if you don't use and agent.

It would be best to get the visa before you come to avoid the added expense of travelling to another country soon after you arrive.

If you are from a country that qualifies for the 15 day visa on arrival you will not get a touris visa from any nearby embassy or consulate. Info here for VOA: http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/123/15393-Visa-on-Arrival.html

You cannot apply within the country for a visa and the longest extension you can get is 7 days. You should apply for a tourist visa before starting your trip.

Thanks for the reply. What does that mean I can't get a tourist visa from a nearby embassy or consulate? Do you mean I can't go to Lao's and get a tourist visa because I am on the VOA list (so I have to get the visa from my local Thai consulate?). It would actually be easier in Lao's/Penang I think as I can combine it with a trip there.

I means that in all likelihood they will not issue a tourist visa in a neighboring country.

Apply for it in your home country before you travel to Thailand

Flying out and in again will get you another 15 days.
