UDD plans post-Songkran battle

BANGKOK, April 7 -- The pro-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) movement will stage its political battle after April 18 while the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) will not mobilise outside Lumpini Park until Monday.

Speaking to the Red Shirt crowd on the second day of the three-day mass gathering on the outskirts of Bangkok, UDD chairman Jatuporn Prompan thanked‎ police officers, soldiers and UDD security guards for providing security and assisting the rally to run smoothly.

More importantly, Mr Jatuporn announced that the UDD will stage a mass gathering again after April 18, and asked supporters to prepare for a political fight, which may be the ‘final battle,’ in order to achieve the pro-government group’s goals. He expressed confidence that their fight will not end in failure.

The UDD chair also slammed PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban for intent to install a neutral prime minister, urging the Red Shirt demonstrators to oppose the demand because it was through undemocratic means.



Meanwhile, anti-government leader Suthep announced that there will be no activities mobilising outside Lumpini Park until Monday (April 7) to avoid possible confrontations with the PDRC’s opponents--- the Red Shirts--- which have been holding a three-day mass gathering scheduled from April 5-7.

Mr Suthep announced to supporters to prepare for the next mass rally which may last for at least 15 days and will be the final battle.

The next gathering will occur after either the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) ruling on whether or not caretaker prime minster Yingluck Shinawatra is guilty of dereliction of duty in her supervision of the rice pledging scheme, or after the Constitutional Court rules on Ms Yingluck’s allegedly unconstitutional transfer of National Security Council (NSC) chief Thawil Pliensri to an inactive post.

The protest leader said that the PDRC resolved to unblock and end shutdowns of all state offices, except Government House and the Interior Ministry, beginning on April 8 on the condition that the state offices must allow the PDRC to erect banners indicating support for national reform. Thai Red Shirts vow 'final fight' to defend Yingluck

BANGKOK, April 7, 2014 (AFP) - Thailand's pro-government "Red Shirt" supporters rallied for a second day Sunday, vowing to protect Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is facing a slew of legal challenges that could see her toppled within weeks.

Tens of thousands of Red Shirts descended on a wide road in a Bangkok suburb in a colourful and boisterous show of support for the crisis-mired premier, who has faced months of anti-government demonstrations in the Thai capital.

Drawn mostly from the poor but populous north and northeast, the Red Shirts say they will not accept the removal of another democratically elected government by a Bangkok-based royalist establishment backed by the judiciary and the military.

"This will be the final fight," Red Shirt chairman Jatuporn Prompan told the rally, which is due to end on Monday.

"We are here to settle the bill with the elite," he said, adding the Red Shirts were would not be deterred by any crackdown on their movement.
"It is better to die than to be slaves," he said.

Scores of people died in 2010 in an army crackdown on a Red Shirt rally against the ousting of a Thaksin-allied government by the nation's courts.

Political violence linked to the current round of turmoil has killed 24 people and left hundreds wounded, raising fears of a wider civil conflict if the two bitterly divided sides can not reach a compromise.

That seems unlikely with kingdom's political crisis poised to enter a new and potentially turbulent phase with legal challenges mounting against Yingluck.

By Sunday afternoon "there were an estimated 30,000 Red Shirts," said Paradorn Pattanatabut, a security adviser to the premier, told AFP.

He said the rally drew around 100,000 people at its peak on Saturday evening, several times larger than a figure given by the rival anti-government movement.

Opposition protesters in Bangkok want to oust Yingluck and install an unelected premier to oversee reforms aimed at curbing corruption and money politics, which they blame on the rise of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin, Yingluck's elder brother, became premier in 2001 before being ousted in a military coup five years later and lives overseas to avoid jail for a corruption conviction he says was politically motivated.

Yingluck could face indictment over negligence charges linked to a controversial and costly rice subsidy scheme.

The nation's Constitutional Court is also mulling accusations of abuse of power by the premier over the transfer of a top security official.

The Red Shirts accuse the courts of political bias and have pledged to resist legal moves to topple Yingluck, which are expected within weeks.

The rival rallies have highlighted the political fault lines that have riven Thai society since Thaksin's overthrow by royalist generals in 2006.

The language of 'we don't want a civil but there will be one if we don't agree with the verdict of the court' is very troubling on many levels. The implicit violence, the threat to the independence of the court system, the 'Suthep is undemocratic so we will be undemocratic' is intimidating. I'm don't want to be in Bangkok when the shit hits the fan but may have no choice. There really is no defense when a mob has been enraged and is turned loose on the general populace. I expect random as well as organized acts of violence if certain court decisions are not to Thaksin's liking. He's backed into a corner and like most animals backed into a corner, the viciousness knows no bounds. Years of hate speech have brainwashed many to the point where a little nudge and they are not responsible for their actions.

If this degenerates into a civil war, and it is fought in Bangkok, everyone will lose as the death toll will be very high and the property destruction and loss of business will be astronomical. I sincerely hope the army is ready, at a moments notice, and with trusted units, to quell any outbreaks of organized violence and the National Police Chief, having come to his senses, can organize enough police to act against random violence. The language coming from the UDD stage is dis-quietening. to say the least.

Noone is listening to Amsterdam in the international community. Every one knows their advise and opinions come out of a hashish pipe. Their will be NO international intervention.

The reds are not battling democracy. They are battling to keep YL and the PTP in power.

True suthep and abhisit are wanted for murder and running the show for the PDRC, however Thaksin is convicted already and running the show for the PTP. WHICH IS WORSE? Wanted for a crime or convicted.

Condemning the rulings of any court makes them think they all are above the law.

The army has done its job in protecting the people, the country, and the king. Their job is not to protect government and political views.

They should should not have hearings on the collective guilt of those MPs. They should do it individually and convict them using the maximum penalties for abusing their power and violating the trust if those who elected them.

Lastly in my retort is that the gov in power already tried to sieze the leaders of the PDRC assets and had to give them back. In case you didnt notice. But almost all in your comments were countered. So who would listen to Amsterdam when they cant see what is under their nose.

Amsterdam is brilliant. He describes Thai democrats struggling to overcome the oppression of rich fat cats who bend the law for their own interest. Your only response is "Thaksin". If Thaksin and all his kin were gone would it then be okay with you if the red shirts elected someone else (they are the majority, after all)? I doubt it. Their candidate would then be "follower of Thaksin" or "successor of Thaksin". 1. "The HRC must not define Human Rights for Thailand.". Really? There's a couple of things seriously wrong with this sentiment. Firstly, the HRC is totally apolitical and relies on decades of profound thought and formulation of what human rights are. Secondly, he dismisses the HRC while reaching out to the UN, Geneva, Western governments, and "international intervention". Do you think for one millisecond any country, the UN or Geneva will entertain helping any government that dismisses the HRC? North Korea maybe?

2. "Time for the PTP Govt. to quit obstructing the Thailand’s case at the ICC". Really? Ya don't say! But I do wonder why he did admit that PTP is obstructing international justice.

The PDRC protesters were always very careful to clean up at all their stages and never left a mass. This is disgusting. This an example of the behavior of the people who would rule Thailand. These people have no self respect. Maybe that's a common factor of Thaksin supporters.
