The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has authorized 53 million baht in funding to hasten construction of flood barriers to prevent flooding in the capital city area.

Mr. Thanom Orntketpol (ถนอม อ่อนเกตุผล), the BMA Deputy Spokesman, stated that the BMA management has approved 53.5 million baht to the Department of Drainage and Sewerage to construct floodwater barriers in various canals in order to retain water and slowly drain them to reservoir areas in the western area of the city. Mr. Thanom stated that these measures were necessary to prevent flooding in Bangkok's western districts and expects construction of the barriers to be completed in three months.

Long term measures will be taken with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives as well as the Royal Irrigation Department to arrive at a concrete solution to flood problems in Bangkok.
