Thai Rak Thai to show 'CCTV video' of controversial meeting

The Thai Rak Thai Party will today show an alleged close-circuit video recording of events at the Defence Ministry last year to counter allegations it was involved in electoral fraud, party executive Pongthep Thepkanchana said yesterday.

The "unedited" video recording will be played for the media at 9.30am today at the party's head office. It will include a series of nine "captured" pictures presented by Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban.

Pongthep spoke after the third hearing of a case at the Constitution Tribunal, which could lead to the party being dissolved - if it's found guilty of serious electoral offences.

Two witnesses gave contradictory information yesterday about their meeting with former defence minister Thamarak Isarangura at the Defence Ministry.

Thai Rak Thai representative Somsak Toraksa asked for the Tribunal's permission to play the recording -but the Tribunal said it could watch the video for itself.

Suthep released nine captured pictures, which he claimed were from the close-circuit television cameras at the ministry.

They showed Pattana Chart Thai director Suksan Chaithet, Pattana Chart Thai candidate Chawakarn Tosawat, along with Thamarak's close aides Tawee Suwannapat and Pongsri Siwamoke, meeting Thamarak to negotiate and receive money from Thamarak on March 3 last year.

Suthep claims that Thamarak, as Thai Rak Thai deputy leader, and deputy secretary-general Pongsak Ruktapongpisal, hired candidates from small parties to field candidates in the April 2 election last year.

Chawakarn Tosawat, a Pattana Chart Thai candidate for Bangkok, a witness for the Attorney-General, said he was contacted by Tawee to facilitate the hiring of candidates.

Information about candidates' membership had to be changed so that they could qualify to run in the poll, he said.

Chawakarn said he, along with Suksan, Tawee and Pongsri, went to see Thamarak and Pongsak at the Thai Rak Thai headquarters on March 2, before going to see Thamarak at the Defence Ministry the following day.

He said the CCTV pictures from the Defence Ministry showed Tawee Suwannapat receiving Bt50,000 for finding 15 candidates from three small parties to run in the election. Tawee had expected Bt150,000 for the deal, he noted.

Thamarak told him to find candidates to run in the former Opposition parties' constituencies, including the 14 provinces in the South, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong and Sa Kaew, as the Democrats had boycotted the election.

Thamarak also told him that Pongsak had to be present at the negotiations, as he would be paying the money, while Thamarak facilitated the conspiracy, Chawakarn said.

Chawakarn said he decided to reveal the electoral fraud to Suthep after receiving less than the agreed amount of money from the Thai Rak Thai executive.

"I was guilty and it is hard to deny. I'm ready to destroy myself by admitting the crime to reveal the truth," he said.

Chawakarn described what happened - as shown in the CCTV images - for Suthep to use as evidence against the Thai Rak Thai. He said he then went to stay at Suthep's house for awhile and received spending money from him.

However, Tawee, as another witness, denied everything Chawakarn said. He said that as a reporter, he went to see Thamarak on March 3 to discuss the situation in the three southernmost provinces. But he didn't meet Thamarak, as claimed by Chawakarn.

He said he was holding documents containing information about the situation in the South, before returning the documents to Pongsri. There was no talk about the election, he said.

Moreover, he claimed he did not go to meet Thamarak at the Thai Rak Thai Party headquarters and wasn't close to Thamarak, he said.

PARTY DISSOLUTION TRIAL

Tribunal hears of cash deal struck with TRT

The leader of Pattana Chart Thai, a little-known political party at the centre of the April 2 election fraud case, admitted yesterday before the Constitution Tribunal that a deal had indeed been struck with then deputy Thai Rak Thai leader Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhaya in exchange for cash. Chavakarn Tosawat, the party leader, told the tribunal that the deal, made on March 2 last year, required that the party field candidates in the April 2 general election to help Thai Rak Thai.

Ramkamhaeng University students ask TRT to stop interfering

Thai Rak Thai deputy spokesman Jatuporn Promphan reacted angrily on Wednesday after a group of Ramkhamhaeng University students visited the party headquarters and demanded he stop intervening in the university's activities.

Some 20 students lead by student organisation chairman Somchote Meechana yesterday submitted a letter to the Thai Rak Thai caretaker leader Chaturon Chaisang, asking the party to stop interfering with the students. But Jatuporn received the letter himself.

The students also brought a banner that read "We demand political groups to stop interfering with the student's organisation".

Jatuporn denied he had asked the Sattha Dharma party to assist the Thai Rak Thai party in protesting against the junta. The Sattha Dharma party is a student group contesting the student elections.

Jatuporn, a former Ramkhamhaeng student, was earlier accused of hiring Ramkhamhaeng students to protest against the junta appointed government.

"I want you to think it over if you ever met the junta and received money or not. I want you swear to me that you did not lie," he said angrily.

He then admitted he was a former Sattha Dharmma party member - having denied any knowledge of the group two days ago - :D and said he was always invited to lecture when the student organisation elections were held.

Somchote countered Jatuporn saying that he and the other students had come to the Thai Rak Thai the party headquarters because it was a duty of the student organisation and insisted they had never received any money from the Council for National Security (CNS).

As soon as Somchote finished speaking, Jatuporn pointed at the group and shouted furiously: "You are brave to swear that you have never known the CNS or received money from them".

"We are Ramkhamhaeng too, so don't you lie me. Ramkhamhaeng students in the past fought with the dictator, but today what do you do? When the military made a coup were you concerned?," shouted Jatuporn. * yelling at a bunch of students? :o *

Jatuporn said today he would file a complaint against the group.

TRT have been playing games in Ram for years. A few years back there was some controversy over a rector. Now this. It will however not be easy for them as there are very large numbers of Southern students at Ram who will not be bought, and will definitely resist any TRT attempted money coup in Ram as maybe they are finding out now. Considering that Mr. Thaksin has said he is for national reconciliation maybe his former underlings should listen to him and stop trying to foment divisions in a university, or maybe now that Mr. Thaksin has left the TRT they no longer respect or listen to him.

Suwat to leave Thai Rak Thai

Thai Rak Thai deputy leader Suwat Liptapanlop and his faction will resign from the party this week, Suwat's younger brother, former MP Tewan Liptapanlop, said Thursday.

Tewan said members of the faction had discussed their future and agreed to leave the former ruling party, which faces possible dissolution over electoral fraud charges. About 20 faction members had already signed a resignation letter, he said.

Tewan cited the unclear political situation and the fact that the new constitution had yet to be completed as factors behind the faction's move. He said it also wanted to show the junta it was distinct from Thai Rak Thai.

Tewan denied the faction had agreed to form a new party with Pinij Charusombat's group.

However, another faction member said Suwat and Pinij would form a party this week. Their new party would share seats in the Northeast with Somsak Thepsuthin, who led his Wang Nam Yom faction out of the Thai Rak Thai Party on Monday, he said.

Suwat, probably most famous for stealing the gold medal that belonged to Olympic champion weightlifter Udomporn, was the head of at least four different Ministries during the Thaksin regime years, including Deputy Prime Minister.... and now he wants to say he had nothing to do with Thai Rak Thai????

And why is his brother announcing his resignation? The weasel was never short of his own words whenever an opportunistic opportunity came his way before?

All these TRT resignations speak volumes... it's almost as d@mning as the evidence submitted to the courts to dissolve the Party.

post-9005-1170352589.jpg

Former Prime Minister Office Minister, Former Tourism and Sports Minister, Former Labor Minister Somsak....

post-9005-1170353580.jpg

and... Former Deputy Leader of Thai Rak Thai Party, Former Industry Minister, Former Deputy Prime Minister Pinij

All of them.... They all just what to say,

"Thai Rak Who?.... I never heard of them, I had no involvement with them, and I don't know their leader. All I know is that I want to run under a different Party's banner and uhmmm.... oh yes, stay out of prison."

"But Suwat denied the reports, telling reporters Tuesday that he only borrowed the medal from Udomporn for a day in order to make a genuine gold replica of it as a special gift for her, :D and would return the medal back to her by a Thai Airways flight."

Make a replica for her when she held the real thing? :o

TRT acting leader is confident that his party will not be abolished

The acting leader of the Thai Rak Thai Party (TRT), Mr. Chaturon Chaisang, considers that the Constitutional Court does not have a resolution to dissolve his party because the dissolution would cause public members to have sympathy.

Mr. Chaturon also believes that the political movement of former TRT leader and deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not influence the court’s decision to dissolve the party. Mr. Chaturon said that people will be able to understand his party’s situation and the political movement of Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin.

Mr. Chaturon also spoke about a number of TRT members who may resign from the party, saying it would depend on their political reasons, and it is not related to the abolishment of the party. He said that once they have resigned, they would still be barred from politics from five years if the court has decided to dissolve the party.

Two factions to quit Thai Rak Thai Party

The Thai Rak Thai yesterday publicly acknowledged that two factions were set to leave soon and blamed fears that the party could eventually be dissolved for driving away many former MPs. :o

Speaking at a press conference at Thai Rak Thai headquarters, caretaker party executive Chamlong Krutkhunthod said it was normal for coup-makers to attempt to weaken political parties but that it appeared the makers of the September 19 coup had chosen also to dissolve some parties. * except that the dissolution case was filed well before the coup *

Chamlong said that although no resignations had been submitted, the factions led by Suwat Liptapanlop and Pinij Charusombat were set to leave the party soon.

He said even though the two groups were not among the founders of the party, and their small numbers meant their departure would have little impact on the party, it was still emotional wrenching for him and others remaining. :D

"We worked together when the party was facing trouble. We want them to stay with us. However, we understand the situation is forcing them to go that way. The party won't blame them, and we wish them all the luck," he said.

post-9005-1170955853.gif

The party has 228 former MPs at present, and the departure of the two groups will result in only a small reduction, said Chamlong.

He said the party's key members would from now on visit people in constituencies it won in previous elections and seek new candidates for the next election to replace those about to leave.

Thai Rak Thai spokesman Sita Divari blamed the resignations on the junta, * except that, once again, the mass defections from the TRT began well before the coup; someone needs to buy these guys a calendar * which he said was planning to have the party dissolved. * except that it is up to the Court to decide *

POLITICS POLL FRAUD HEARINGS

Leader denies rigging database

The leader of the Pattana Chart Thai party yesterday testified that he had no involvement in the alleged rigging of a database to ensure that 30 of the minor political party's candidates qualified to contest the anulled April 2 general election. Boonthaweesak Amornslip denied before the Constitution Tribunal that he was part of a scheme in which election officials were allegedly bribed to falsify the qualifications of election candidates. Amornwit Suwanpan, a former EC official, previously told an EC investigation panel that Mr Boonthaweesak paid him 30,000 baht to rig the EC's database.

Constitution Tribunal calls for testimony, Democrat Party future at stake

The Constitution Tribunal has set a date for a trial to determine the outcome in the dissolution case of two political parties.

The Constitution Tribunal will be taking the testimonies of relevant parties in a case involving the dissolution of the Democrat and Prachathipatai Kawna (ประชาธิปไตยก้าวหน้า) political parties. Four witnesses to testify before the Constitution Tribunal include Mr. Thawisak Amornsilp (ทวีศักดิ์ อมรศิลป์), Ms. Samran Jantamitr (สำราญ จันทะมิตร), Mr. Susan Chaisetot (สุสันต์ ชัยเสทศ), and Mr. Chawakarn Tosawat (ชวการ โตสวัสดิ์). All of the witnesses were allegedly hired by the Democrat Party to defame the Thai Rak Thai Party by accusing the TRT of paying them to run in the last general election.

The accusation is one of four allegations concerning the Democrat Party submitted by the Attorney-General to the Constitution Tribunal.

The final testimony presentation of witnesses in the Democrat Party's dissolution case is expected to take place on April 5.

Pattana Chart Thai Party leader testified that Democrat Party offered bribes

Pattana Chart Thai Party leader Boontaweesak Amornsin confessed that Democrat Party secretary-general Supthep Thaugsuban demanded the Pattana Chart Thai Party to withdraw its candidates from the previous election in order to isolate the Thai Rak Thai Party candidates. Mr. Boontaweesak also admitted that the Democrat Party also pressured his party to slander the Thai Rak Thai Party.

The consideration on the case to dissolve of political parties started yesterday (Feb 8) at the Constitutional Court. The court began interrogating members of the Democrat Party and the Progressive Democratic Party. Mr. Boontaweesak was the first to testify before the court. He said Mr. Suthep came over to his house and bribed him so his party would withdraw its candidates in the previous election. However, Mr. Boontaweesak claimed that he rejected the bribery because he did not want to get involved in this political negotiation.

In response, Mr. Suthep expressed no concern and criticized Mr. Boontaweesak’s testimony was winding and unreliable.

TRT suffers mass exodus as Suwat's faction quits

Thai Rak Thai suffered a mass exodus yesterday as deputy leader Suwat Liptapanlop led 29 members of his Wang Nam Khiew faction in quitting the party. Without Mr Suwat's group, the party is left with some 200 members, who are likely to resign en masse soon. Mr Suwat said his political future was up in the air and the ''reconciliation alliance'' he has forged with other former Thai Rak Thai key figures _ Wang Phayanak faction leader Phinij Jarusombat, Wang Phayanak key member Preecha Laohapongchana and former Thai Rak Thai deputy leader Suwit Khunkitti _ was not a new political party. The reason he would rather not discuss forming a new party was because there was no telling if he would be banned from politics or not, he said, referring to the party dissolution trial. If the party is dissolved, all Thai Rak Thai executives will be barred from politics for five years.

Ousted Thai PM’s party suffers mass defection

BANGKOK • The once-mighty party of ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra suffered another blow yesterday, as 30 former lawmakers resigned. The lawmakers all represented the impoverished Issan region of northeastern Thailand, a key base of support for the deposed billionaire premier, who styled himself as a champion of the poor. “All 30 us have decided to quit Thai Rak Thai together because the political situation has changed after the coup, and because former prime minister Thaksin has announced from overseas that he is ceasing his political role,” the group’s leader, Suwat Liptapanlop, said.

I am a bit confused here because of conflicting statements I have heard. Can someone please tell me the latest on the 5 year holiday.

First I was under the impression that if a person got out of the party before it was dissolve they would not need to have the 5 year holiday from politics.

However post #201 suggests otherwise in that it does not matter if you are in or out.

What is correct?

If the local ex-TRT MP influential ones and their canvassers who have left start spreading that message around the Isaan, TRT is going to have problems retaining its popularity even if it isnt disolved. Interesting development and I would doubt that Suwat will be banned if he is willing to spread the message.

Democrat Spokesperson not surprised with massive TRT resignation

The Democrat Party Spokesperson said that he was not surprised some members of the Thai Rak Thai Party were resigning.

Democrat Party Spokesperson Ong-arch Klampiboon (องอาจ คล้ามไพบูลย์), expressed his belief that the situation in which several members of the Thai Rak Thai Party are resigning was not particularly surprising. Mr. Ong-arch pointed out that the Thai Rak Thai was a collective of several political parties. The Democrat Party Spokesperson also addressed concerns that former Thai Rak Thai members may serve as proxies for the Council for National Security (CNS) and the government, by stating that he did not want any mandate or influence from the CNS or government to be passed on to the next administration.

Mr. Ong-arch said that the public should evaluate whether a continuation of the CNS's power would benefit the nation or not. The Democrat Party Spokesperson added that political parties should be independent, and uphold political ideals aimed at the benefit of the nation.

My local M.Ban was in disarray and total denial when the the coup took place and for some time after.

Since before christmas they have slowly come to realise that the TRT and more important, Thaksin , have let them down badly with their double edged benefits and what they are now left with after giving their total support to both him and his local representatives.

The more he opens his mouth the further down the slippery pole he deservedly goes, to the point of now being openly ridiculed.

The airport has been a real eye opener for them and even the staunchist are now openly criticising both him and the party.

Most of all they all they feel he has let H.M. the King down and this is totally unforgivable not only in their eyes but the countries.

Mods, Please edit the last sentence if it is sensitive in any way.

Last of all the rats are now deserting the rapidly sinking ship, as is the character of the party and true to form.

It also indicates they already have a good indication of the outcome of the investigation on electoral fraud along with the penalties. :

IMHO of course :o

POLITICS / CPD URGES CLEAR BREAK FROM THAKSIN

Quote :-

TRT defectors still being watched

Core leaders of political factions which defect from Thai Rak Thai should make it clear they will abandon Thaksinocracy, the Campaign for Popular Democracy (CPD) said yesterday.

Thaksinocracy, the label given to the system which grew around former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has been decried as a breeding ground for policy-oriented corruption.

CPD secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila said key defectors have to take a clear stand to show they are no longer attached to the system which many blamed for weakening the country.

Yes, they really are going to have to monitor this.

I was trying to add an edit of a similar tone in my last post regarding their HONEST intentions and the endemic habits of their now defuncted party being carried forward under a new banner

Different party, same old s*** comes to mind.
