Accident Mae Phu Waterfall: Schoolboy Drowns After Suffering Cramp
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 14-year-old schoolboy has tragically drowned after reportedly suffering a cramp while swimming at the popular Mae Phu Waterfall in Laplae District, Uttaradit province. The incident occurred on the afternoon of 24 May, casting a shadow of grief over what began as a joyful day out with friends. Police Lieutenant Colonel Nareerat Apithanaphimpimkul of Laplae Police Station received an emergency call at around 17:00 reporting a suspected drowning. Rescue divers from the Uttaradit Songkroh Foundation were immediately dispatched to the scene. The incident took place at the main pool area beneath the waterfall, a common swimming spot for visitors. Upon arrival, rescue personnel found a group of anxious teenagers, both boys and girls, waiting at the water’s edge, visibly distraught. Divers were deployed swiftly to the deep pool where the boy had last been seen. Within a short time, they recovered the body of a boy wearing only shorts. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was identified as “Ta,” a 14-year-old student (Mathayom 2) at a private school in Mueang District, Uttaradit. According to his friends, Ta had arrived at the waterfall with a group of more than ten classmates earlier in the day. The group began swimming around noon and paused for lunch at approximately 13:30. It was around this time that friends noticed Ta was missing. They initially searched the surrounding area and the nearby motorcycle parking spot but found no sign of him. As concern grew, they contacted adults who then alerted emergency services. Before rescue teams arrived, some friends attempted to dive and search for him but were hindered by the depth of the water. Upon retrieval of the body, it is believed that Ta may have suffered a sudden cramp while swimming, causing him to sink unnoticed as the group continued to play. Authorities have issued a reminder for the public, especially young swimmers, to exercise caution when swimming in natural water sources, particularly during group outings where safety can be compromised by distraction. On 25 May at 4 PM, fans in Phang Nga assembled at the Princess Mother’s Park for a lively celebration themed “When We Win the League… We Celebrate Big!” Donning their iconic red Liverpool shirts, they organised a parade featuring a replica Premier League trophy on local songthaews (passenger vehicles). The procession, led by motorcycles and tuk-tuks, included over 20 vehicles adorned with Liverpool flags, delighting onlookers as it wound through the city. Enthusiastic fans cheered along the route and took photos with the trophy at iconic spots like the Khao Tapu roundabout. In Kanchanaburi, hundreds of Liverpool devotees formed a spirited parade, waving flags and cheering as they visited key landmarks, including an old paper mill, the Kanchanaburi Skywalk, and culminating at the famous Bridge over the River Kwai, where some even took to rafts to celebrate. Despite cloudy weather and drizzle, over 100 loyal fans in Loei gathered at the Naga courtyard to revel in their team's success. Picture courtesy of Matichon A 35-year-old man died after a grenade he attempting to throw exploded in his hand, following a failed attempt to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred around 08:00, on 25 May in Samo Thong Subdistrict, Tha Chana District, Surat Thani Province. Four others were injured in the blast, two men and two women. Police investigators, led by Pol. Lt. Chinakrit Sawatdiwong from Tha Chana Police Station, responded to reports of an explosion outside a single-storey cement house in Village No. 1. Emergency rescue workers from the Chon Saratha Surat Thani Foundation also attended the scene. The deceased, later identified as Mr. Surapong Thongnak, was found lying face-down in front of the house. Blood from multiple wounds pooled around his body. A nearby parked car had shattered windows, believed to be caused by the force of the explosion. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr. Surapong had come to the residence in an attempt to reconcile with his former partner. Witnesses said he was visibly agitated and allegedly intended to stab her with a pair of scissors inside the house. However, local residents, who had been sitting outside drinking coffee, intervened and stopped him. Following this confrontation, Mr. Surapong returned to his white Honda Civic, retrieved a grenade of unknown type and pulled the pin before hurling it toward the group in front of the house. The grenade failed to detonate. As he attempted to throw a second device, it exploded prematurely in his hand, killing him instantly and injuring four bystanders. All injured individuals were taken to Tha Chana Hospital for treatment. Forensic officers from Region 8 were called in to investigate the scene and confirm the type of explosive used.
