Hi all,

I'm working with my school to get my 30-day non-visa stamp CHANGED into a Non-Imm Education Visa INSIDE Thailand (Yeah i know right).

At the moment, we are trying to get a new 30-day pass, as we are US citizens, but we want to do this via one of the local border crossings (Nong Khai, Poipet, etc).

I'm wrestling with my employer over the point that we MUST exit Thailand AND enter another country before turning around to come back and get a new 30 day non-visa stamp. This would of course involve paying for a Visa for either Cambodia or Laos, depending on where we go.

My employer is saying that we can just go to the border, leave Thailand, turn around (not go into the other country), and go right back in getting a 30-day pass. I think this is rubbish.

We'll need to book our travel arrangements as soon as possible, given that our visa expires on the 10th //edit by lopburi3//

Cross border, enter other country, exit other country, return to Thailand and receive new 30 day stamp. You must have stamps from other country which means a visa (at border) for Laos or Cambodia. No need to visit any Consulate.

If you use the Nong Khai 'Friendship Bridge' you exit Thailand and take the bus accross the bridge. At the Lao side you purchase a Lao visa (1500 baht) or 30 US dollars, (these rates rise a little at weekends). You will need your passport and a passport size photo to obtain your Lao visa. When you have your visa walk around to the entry point and you will be stamped into Lao. Do some duty free shopping or just walk around the block and exit Lao, take the bus back over the bridge to Thailand and you will receive a thirty day 'on arrival' stamp. The whole process can take less than an hour.

This is how it works at Nong Khai, I don't know what the situation is at other land crossings.

Hope this is of assistance

It is rubbish..

Your employer is:

a. totally clueless

b. blatantly lying to you

In either case, I'd be highly suspect of any assistance they offer you regarding any future visa.

*edit.... keep forgetting you can't list things here as a) and then b ) because removing the space between b and ) results in :o

Ok, sweet... thanks for confirming my suspicions...

Does anyone know if this would work at the Poi Pet, Cambodia border as well? Also, will borders be closed for holiday tomorrow (gotta ask).

I will proceed to book a day trip to Poi-pet to get a new 30-day pass, and next week I will continue my saga in getting my 30-day non-visa pass changed into a Non-Imm Ed visa... My boss says she can do it. :o

Borders are open on holidays (but that border point is usually very, very crowded on both holidays and weekends so it would not be the best choice). I believe if you book with a visa trip service they will be going to the other border crossing to Cambodia to avoid the crowds.

the bus round trip from bkk to poipet and back is $350... i don't need visa service, and i might i assume since the 9th is a holiday, that would deter traffic to most all consulates near the border?

Anyway, i guess i will travel to khao san to search for runners that can bus me to a quieter border town... do i need a photo for a cambodian visa, or can i just show up? also, do we need proof of travel within 30 days, like airplane itinerary in order to get the 30 day non-visa stamp?

ok thankies

Obviously a bus does not cost $350 to the border. We use Baht here. The best bet would be to use one of the visa services advertised in the Bangkok Post or other paper as that 2,000 baht price includes visa/food/comfortable transport and you are not subject to various other demands for money. The visa itself is 1,000 baht. You need photos.
