Where to go for extended visa run?

Featured Replies

Apologies if in the wrong forum, but I'm sure mods will move it if so.

Anyway, I have a multiple re entry non O visa ( 1 year ), but will be returning to country of origin after 6 months, and flight leaves 1 day before 2nd entry expires if I just go to border for 1st visa run, so I'd like to stay out of the country for a few days to give myself some leeway. Question is, where? Obvious choice is Malaysia as don't have visa fees there, but where is the best place to pass a few days? Penang?

Or, is there somewhere else worth the visa cost? Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Phillipines, Indonesia? Burma isn't an option for me though.

Thanks for any opinions.

Luang Prabang.

Siem Reap.

Actually, if you have not been to Angkor Wat, that would be my first choice.

Laos and Vietnam are both nice. HCMC and Vientiane both nice Citys. Vientiane a little quieter but relaxed.

agree;

boht offer direct flights from Bangkok, visa on arrival, inexpensive lodging, good food and easy to get around.

But as above i would do siem rep/angkor wat, make it a 4 days visit at least.

Bali would be number 3 but will cost a bit more an you need at least a week stay to visit a few places

Singapore...expensive though.

Bali.... quite a long flight.

Penang.

KL.

I did Hong Kong once and justified it by buying some computer bits and pieces.

If you've never been to Angkor then it's one of the few must sees IMHO.

LP is kinda boring.

Penang is a lovely, walkable, low rise city with a lot of good restaurants. I also really enjoyed Hanoi. Luang Phrabang I found to be overrun with tourists but it's setting is beautiful and a trip on the Mehkong River is a treat. If you think motorcyclists are rude in Thailand, give HCMC (Saigon) a try.

Angkor Wat is a very special place though also overrun with tourists, especially big Chinese and Korean tour groups. If you go, leave a day and a half for the main temples then hire a car or Tuk-Tuk to take you deep into the complex where there are many more remote temples where you will have them to yourselves.

VERY hot April through June. There are some very nice, inexpensive guest houses in Siem Reap, no need to pay huge hotel room rates.

Depends if you need a city around you or not, for me its not.

4,000 islands in the south of Lao or the far north.

Borneo is pretty much the best place we've ever been to, but the flights would probably be expensive. The east coast of Malaysia will be beautiful at this time of the year, the rains should be over and main tourist season not yet started but you must avoid Malaysia and Singapore school holidays when the prices take a very serious hike upwards. It would have been nice to go there by train, but too dangerous to go through the deep south now. From KL I think you can get the jungle train to Kota Baru, or Air Asia fly there very inexpensively and on to the islands with their talcum powder beaches.

If that doesn't appeal, I agree with WhizBang about Angkor Wat if you haven't already seen it, reasonably priced flights to Siem Riep from Bangkok.

Be the change that you wish to see in the world.

Apologies for not responding before, but have been out of internet access since I posted.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm kind of interested about these 4,000 islands, I thought Lao was land locked.
