April 22, 201412 yr Tried the Dominos Extravaganzza and their Seafood pizzas. It has definitely improved from their original tasteless cardboard style. Now it is a little better than the average frozen supermarket pizza. Fits right in with all the other lousy pizzas sold in Thailand. Not saying much, but Pizza Hut and Pizza Company are better tasting.

I will miss the pepperoni and American Italian sausage.
April 22, 201412 yr Many people on TV shun American style pizza as not being Italian. The fact is that American style pizza was mostly developed by immigrant and 2nd generation Italians living in the USA. Same is true about American Italian spaghetti and lasagna. Foods evolve and the original is sometimes not as good as later revisions.
April 22, 201412 yr Noooo pepperoni noooo! U know what it is mean in Italian pepperoni? Bell pepper... That is another American distortion... Anyway if you want to put spicy salame everybody is free to do what he wants... But call it with the real name .. Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Italian-American lasagna with ricotta cheese instead of bechamel cream sauce is bloody brilliant! Some people (including some Americans) diss anything at all American just because it's American. Personally, I don't like big chains though ... and many of those have corporate American roots. Edited April 22, 201412 yr by Jingthing

Personally, I don't like big chains though ... and many of those have corporate American roots. I hate béchamel sauce, especially in lasagna. Ricotta and mozzarella for me. Corporate restaurants often don't to make an item the same as homemade or mom and pop shops. McDonalds is a great example. I am not usually hungry enough to eat at McDonalds but egg McMuffins are ok on occasion. Their burgers suck! Corporate pizza is for mass production, cost savings and fast through put. Everything is designed so that that it will bake quickly in timed convection ovens with automatic rollers. Works great except for the major sacrifice in taste and texture. And anyway what u can do in another continent is completely different from Mediterranean quality.. Say that after American ( like all the others ) grew up with that taste and that why many time they don't like the original Italian.. Simply they don't know... But this is human The mum cooking is always the best for everyone... Same for me the best hamburger in the world is the one done in my hometown ( Santa margherita ligure ) ... The ones I tried in NY was very bad compared to that one Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand
April 22, 201412 yr "mum cooking is always the best for everyone" I have known many people that said their mother's cooking wasn't good.
April 22, 201412 yr Perhaps a little off topic, but it isn't only pizza that has country variations. I have eaten sushi in Japan and in California. California was more tasty, innovative and interesting. Chinese foods in the US are often different and very good and they compare favorably against mainland and Hong Kong. Hong Kong and main land restaurants sometimes have US locations and have devised new variations in the US.

The ones I tried in NY was very bad compared to that one Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand The modern history of pizzas within Italy is one where the thicker, more bread-like pizzas are based around Naples, but the further north one goes the thinner and crispier they get. I've made pizzas, they are similar to making bread except for two things: firstly, olive oil is added to the dough (this is just like Indian naan bread but they use yoghurt instead - indeed in the UK I would often use fresh naan as a home pizza 'cheat'); and secondly the dough is beaten down to remove much of the gas from yeast fermentation. The more you flatten in, the thinner it gets! Fairly obvious, really. I've just read the Italian Wiki on the subject and it doesn't surprise me that American pizzas tend to be deep pan as early immigrants tended to be from the South and, surprisingly, pizzas in northern Italy didn't really take off till after the war... the second world war!
April 22, 201412 yr Hopefully they won't ruin it like the rest of fast food that has moved to Thailand.

I got mine from here: http://bbqthai.com/pattaya_store.html damn, missed that - i bought a beautiful bbq grill there (pattaya shop) about 5 years ago as a self-birthday present, only to get home and find out my condo didn't allow gas grills thankfully i was able to return it to the BKK shop for a full refund! thanks for the tip! <edit> oops, wrong shop -- the one i was thinking of is on suk in south pattaya, and have a shop in BKK on soi 23 or 25</edit> Edited April 22, 201412 yr by dharmabm
April 22, 201412 yr i admit i have not read every single post in this thread, but am surprised not to see any mention of scoozi -- they used to be very good and consistent, but the last year or so have been cranking out <deleted>. the only reason i ever order from them anymore is that it is the lesser of all evils, my son loves their marguerite and they have whole wheat crust... last time i told them to look at my purchase history (i always order online) and look at how many 10's of thousands of baht (if not hundreds) i spent in the last 6 years, and how much i spent in the last year. i doubt they give a shit but it still felt good to tell them how far downhill they had gone. BTW, it is nice to see a spirited discussion that doesn't involve thai politics... i am somewhat surprised that no one has found a way to wriggle that into the conversation! <edit> that's weird, s*h*i*t*e was deleted by the auto censor, but shit was not? </edit> Edited April 22, 201412 yr by dharmabm
April 22, 201412 yr Fah .... There used to be a Shakeys lost behind Siam Square And if any of you remember that you are old timers. Nice touch with the thin slices of dried squid as a topping choice though.

April 23, 201412 yr I can't wait for the Thailand Grand Opening of Los Pollos Hermanos. Me too I'd invest in a franchise store or two--guaranteed money-maker...

Why US called them "pepperoni", I always wondered...
April 23, 201412 yr Damn, whenever the subject of pizza comes up around here (at least 1x/month) people get all doctrinaire and quasi-religious about it. When Domino's first rose to prominence in the US (about 20 years ago as I recall) it was pretty good, I thought. Somehow, when these things get super-globalized, the quality gets lost. One thing is for sure, and most here seem to agree: Pizza Company and Pizza Hut in Thailand are the worst. But really, did we move to Thailand so we could eat pizza?
April 23, 201412 yr In Isan right now. Just at a place that had a Thai Chicken & Green Curry pizza with fresh basil leaves laid out on top of the cheese. They told me it was very spicy & when traveling can't do spicy, so no picture. But on the menu, it looked very tasty. Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand
April 23, 201412 yr Pizza is the latest fad up in isaan with it being ruined with ketchup and mayo sauce, i can see Thais getting fat eating this bread
April 26, 201412 yr Pizza is the latest fad up in isaan with it being ruined with ketchup and mayo sauce, i can see Thais getting fat eating this bread Yes agreed many places. But surely not all. Just need to stay away from the Tourist places. Like Udon, there are 2 spots but unfortunately in the Lady Bar areas or (same) downtown. Issan & non franchise places in the south make coffee, truly original. Western people/Tourists tend to get spoiled with their where. The coffee (cafe) here is easily better then any American franchise & food, either Thai or Mexican - a USA comparison (all USA food is Mexican & so miss thus US cooks, if not flavor, than culture). Up toYou. But 'Skint' talking of ketchup & mayo must be a 'dive'. Same recipe for the US Franchise Giant, "Papa Johns". Best bet to ignore all corporations & go with the smaller guys.
