Update:

Small fire disrupts check-ins at Bangkok airport

BANGKOK: -- A small fire broke out early Saturday at Bangkok International Airport, filling the terminal with smoke and disrupting check-ins but without delaying any flights, officials said.

The fire in an immigration document room occurred as Thailand prepared to welcome royalty from around the world, who are arriving this weekend for celebrations of His Majesty the King's 60th year on the throne.

"The transport minister has reported that the fire was extinguished, but the smoke remains in the air conditioning system at Terminal 1," government spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee told AFP.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

National carrier Thai Airways operates most of Terminal 1. The airline said that thick smoke still hung in the air but the incident had not caused any flight delays. Check-in procedures were moved to another terminal.

"The fire was put out within 10 minutes, but the smoke has entered the air conditioning system. The airport authority is clearing the smoke," Suraphon Isarangura Na Ayuthaya, Thai Airways crisis management chief told AFP.

He expected the terminal to reopen within two hours.

Update:

Short circuit causes minor fire at Don Muang Airport

BANGKOK: -- The small fire has broke out at the check-in area of the Bangkok International Airport or Don Muang Airport Sunday morning but cause little damage to the terminal, according to President of Airport of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT), Chotisak Asapaviriya.

Mr. Chotisak said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in equipment at the check-in area of Terminal One about 7.30am, filling the area with smoke and disrupting the check-in process for passengers.

The fire reportedly occurred in the Immigration Department's document room.

Emergency staff extinguished the blaze in half an hour, Mr. Chotisak added, saying that the fire cause little damage.

AOT is assessing damage in detail and investigating the cause of the fire, he said.

The incident occurred as Thailand is welcoming royalty and royal guests from around the world, most of whom are scheduled to arrive in Bangkok this weekend to attend the celebrations for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th year on the throne.

Perhaps someone wanted to destroy some of the immigration documents, stranger things have happened.

Personally I think it's high time we had a new airport! :o

I am not sure how this would affect Royalty as they would go through the

VIP terminal.

I wonder if this a ploy to speed up the transfer to the New Airport? :o

Actually the Royals do not fly in to Don Muang they arrive at Bangkok military airport.

Same airport...different terminal thats all...

All those TM arrival cards

BANGKOK: -- The fire in a room used for receiving police VIPs damaged electrical wires near some ceiling lights and generated a large amount of smoke, said a policeman at Bangkok International Airport, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press.

About two dozen heads of state and representatives of royal families are to arrive at the airport in the next few days to attend celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. However, all will transit through an adjacent military airport or a separate building used for visiting dignitaries.

Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya said smoke from the fire disrupted some regular passenger check-ins, the official Thai News Agency reported. Airports of Thailand is the semi-privatized state operator of most Thai airports, reports the AP.

Update:

Brief evacuation at airport

DON MUANG: -- Passengers and staff were evacuated from Terminal One at Don Muang airport yesterday following an incident when smoke was seen coming from air-conditioning vents.

Airport authorities, however, were quick to play down the incident, saying it stemmed from faulty lighting and that no one was in any danger.

The incident was brought under control in 30 minutes, a senior official said.

"Passengers and personnel were safely evacuated, and there was a report of slight damage caused by light bulbs that had short-circuited," said Airports of Thailand president Chotisak Asapaviriya.

Chotisak dismissed speculation that a fire had broken out inside the terminal.

Smoke started to spread via air-conditioning ducts from the airport's immigration office due to the melting of light-bulb sockets, immigration chief Maj-General Chakthip Chaichinda said.

Caretaker Deputy Transport Minister Phumtham Wechayachai instructed authorities to check safety measures at the airport following the incident.
