Does anyone know what BAI TANG-O/TANG-O is? If I have the scientific name, I can look up the English.

I have it shown as Thai celery, however it is also shown as Edible Chrysanthemum Leaves (Chrysanthemum coronarium or Leucanthemum coronarium), which look completely different from the photos of BAI TANG-O which I have seen on the internet.

Thanks for your help.

It seems to be the leaves of the Leucanthemum coronarium/Chrysanthemum coronarium plant. Try a Google image search for BAI TANG-O ใบตั้งโอ๋ and see if it fits.

According to this Wiki entry its leaves and stems are edible and used a lot in Chinese cooking.

I think Thai celery is KHEUN CHAI ขึ้นฉ่าย

Dear Katana,

Thank you for your information.

This is a very confusing vegetable. I was already aware of the scientific terms which you mentioned:

Leucanthemum coronarium

Chrysanthemum coronarium

and also:

Chrysanthemum coronarium L..var. spatiosum Bailey

I had also looked at photos for BAI TANG-O on Yahoo! and Google, which is very confusing because they show photos of different vegetables. The above scientific terms indicate that BAI TANG-O, TANG-O and PAK TANG-O are Garland Chrysanthemum in English and Shungiku (春菊) in Japanese.

Shungiku is eaten a lot in Japan and I know this plant well. The leaves are dark green and the stems are very thick and do not have ridges like celery, but are round.

BAI TANG-O appears to be a variety of Celery and quite different from Shungiku (chrysanthemum leaves). Even the photos of Garland Chrysanthemum are quite similar to normal Chrysanthemum leaves.

I have attached a page which shows 2 photos. Could you tell me which one is closest to BAI TANG-O? I wish I was in Thailand and could just go to the supermarket to check this out.

Thank you for your help.

Dear AyG,

Thank you for your reply. The photo shown on the link you included seems to be a little different from normal chrysanthemum leaves and is probably a real photo of BAI TANG-O (PAK TANG-O). I think the problem is due to the fact that so many different photos are indicated as BAI TANG-O.

I have just added a separate post explaining my confusion.

Your help is appreciated.

Dear AyG,

Thank you for your reply just now. I think we have solved the problem. Some sites indicated that BAI TANG-O and KHEUN CHAI were the same vegetable and photos of both vegetables appear when I enter BAI TANG-O.

Your clarification is much appreciated.

Dear AyG,

Thank you for your TESCO LOTUS link. That will be a big help (although I wish it also included romanized Thai).

That is not a problem though. I will work it out.
